Kim Kaphwan had been in many tournaments and experienced many fights, but he had never experienced something like this. The Taekwondo master took pride in his martial art, working very hard through the years to acquire the skills which he worked hard in learning under Master Gang-Il, and developing the level of technique which he possessed, but it seemed as if his opponent was someone who definitely went through his own share of battles. Fights and situations which he couldn’t even so much as begin to fathom. He took in a deep breath of air through his nose, exhaled from his mouth and steeled his nerves when his opponent came running right in towards him.

Raphael unleashed a roar from within as he sprung to action, zeroing on the Korean fighter. As soon as Raphael was close enough, he immediately thrust his arms forward and out for Kim’s mid-section, the handles of his twin sai protruding from between his fingers. The Korean fighter side-stepped out of the two thrusts, and he responded by snapping his right leg forward and out— his foot impacting the mutant directly in his plastron. But Raphael didn’t seemed to be deterred at all by this, as he leaned forward with his weight and quickly swiped his arms across as he took aim for Kim’s head for a double strike. Kim widened his eyes, leaning away from the first strike but then swung his left arm back across to the left, performing an inside outside blocking technique. He winced when the blunt end of the sai handle struck him in the forearm.

The Taekwondo fighter immediately then swung his right leg horizontally across for his opponent’s mid-section, his leg firmly striking the intended area. And to Kim’s surprise, what he felt was something dense and extremely hard. And his opponent didn’t seem to have felt much, if anything from that kick.

Raphael retaliated by swinging his left leg across to the right as he took aim for Kim’s mid-section, but Kim raised slapped his right hand down to block the incoming kick. Impact was made, and the Taekwondo fighter could feel the strength behind the roundhouse kick. He forced to tense his muscles up and lean into the kick to stop himself from stumbling to the side. Raphael twirled his sai firmly within his hands and gripped the weapons firmly, the sharpened tips facing upwards now. Without any hesitation, Raphael thrust the handles of his sai down for Kim Kaphwan’s head. Kim moved his sights up, forced to raise his right arm and position his forearm horizontally to block the strike. Again, he forced himself to tense to resist the weight coming down onto him. The red masked Turtle then leaned forward and thrust his head out, firmly impacting it into Kim’s own head— striking him between the eyebrows and bridge of his nose.

“HNNGH!”

His vision flashed white and black for the briefest of seconds, followed only by a painful expanding pressure moving across the top half of his face. Seeing an opening which he had created, Raphael quickly rushed in for the offensive. He spun his sai within his grasp, gripping and holding them in reverse as he had no intentions to use the sharpened ends. He thrust his arms out as he turned with his hips, unleashing six punches—intending on slamming the blunt handles of his twin sai into Kim Kaphwan’s mid-section. As he managed to strike away at the Korean fighter, Raph heard as Kim grunted from the strikes and once more spin his sai, gripping them right side up. Then, he immediately followed up by pushing his left arm upward in an uppercut, firmly striking his fist directly into his opponent’s chin. Seizing the moment, Raphael immediately turned to a spin and he brought his right leg back across, performing a spinning wheel kick and firmly impacted his heel across the Taekwondo fighter’s head.

Kim fell back as he spun; now landing onto his chest. Quickly, he worked to fight off the dizzying effects from the blow to his head and planted his hands onto the ground, turning to glare to his red masked opponent and rose to his feet.

The Korean fighter then bounced onto his toes, working to ease himself into the fight. Kim rushed in towards the Turtle, now kicking his legs out in a series of alternating front kicks aimed for the reptile’s face but Raphael quickly moved his hands down, batting away at the Taekwondo fighter’s feet. Pulling his left leg back, Kim stood on his right and posed himself to strike as if he were intending to perform a side-kick but then turned and lowered his raised leg down, instead now snapping his right back out in a spinning back thrust kick for Raphael’s head.

However, Kim would feel nothing but air as his foot connected with nothing.

He couldn’t help but widen his eyes as he watched as his opponent seemingly pulled his head into his shell rather quickly, and then popped it out as if it were natural to him. This left Kim rather perplexed.

“Gotta admit, that one was a nice kick. Tricky too.” Raphael dryly spoke.

In a moment of frustration, Kim shook his head and growled. Quickly he snapped his right leg out in a front kick as he took aim for Raphael’s chest, and again performed the technique. Raphael moved his left hand down, using the blunt end of his sai handle to bat down against Kim’s leg. The Korean fighter then rushed right in towards the red masked terrapin, and he jabbed his left and right fists for Raphael’s face. The red masked Turtle ducked and weaved underneath the incoming punches, and he responded by swinging his right leg across down for Kim’s legs, striking the side of the Taekwondo fighter’s left leg, and again brought his right across to strike it onto his opponent’s right. Kim grunted with each strike landing onto him, and returned the favor by unleashing four quick roundhouse kicks for Raphael’s legs.

The Turtle grunted with each impact, feeling the power behind Kim’s kicks but they weren’t anything which he couldn’t handle. Raphael knew a thing or two about pain. He knew how to dish it, and he knew how to take it most especially when he needed to. Raphael quickly then snapped his left leg forward, turning with his hips and weight shifting into the kick, as he aimed for Kim’s mid-section. Kim Kaphwan crossed his arms out, blocking the side kick from the Turtle and then pounced into the air only to throw his weight forward and down, performing a somersault. He parted his legs, and came down like a hammer for the Turtle.

“HANGETSUZAN!”

Raphael quickly side-stepped to the left, evading his opponent as Kim then landed onto the ground in a full on split. Pushing himself to his feet, Kim moved for his opponent and jabbed his left hand out as he moved it in for Raphael’s face, but the Turtle continued to evade by weaving out of the way. Kim leaned forward, and he thrust from his right arm to deliver a solid blow for the mutant Red Ear Slider’s face. Raphael raised his left arm up, using his forearm to block the incoming strike. Kim followed up by kicking his left leg out in a front kick, hopping up and then snapping his right out in a leaping front kick, and continuing by turning with his weight as he swung is right leg across for Raphael’s head as he unleashed another roundhouse.  The red masked Terrapin worked swiftly to move his arms, blocking the kicks aimed for his mid-section, and when the roundhouse came, Raphael leaned back away from the incoming strike.

It was this moment which Kim then raised his right leg up, and swung it down for the top of Raphael’s head.

“NERI CHAGI!”

Raphael was forced to bring both his arms up, blocking the axe kick firmly as he tensed up his arm muscles. He pushed up with the vast strength which he possessed and shoved Kim Kaphwan away from himself. Raphael immediately then turned in a spin and he swung his right arm across to the right, taking aim for Kim’s head. His opponent raised both arms and worked to take the strike in his forearms.  Raphael then twirled the sai within his hands, and gripped them, holding them in reverse as the blunt handles were protruding from between his fingers. He turned with his hips and thrust his hands out several times, firmly striking them into the Taekwondo fighter’s mid-section rather harshly.

Kim grunted and coughed as he lurched from the blows.

It was at this moment that the red masked Turtle then briefly leapt and he swung his right leg horizontally in an arc over to the left, now performing a jumping spinning crescent kick as his foot impacted onto Kim’s mid-section, sending the Korean fighter hurling towards the ropes—and as he hit the ropes, Kim Kaphwan was forced to rebound off from them and Raphael continued on with the punishment. As Kim was about to plummet to the mat, Raphael threw his weight up and took to the air once more, now raising his right leg up and impacted his foot against his opponent’s mid-section, causing Kim to widen his eyes and gasp as he clutched as his body with his arms. The mutant Red Ear Slider landed onto his feet, setting himself proper after having performed that flashkick maneuver.

“Ouch! That’s gotta hurt! Pretty rough out there, even for Raph!” Michelangelo chuckled.

Kim had once more hit the mat and was finding himself in a daze but his resolve to keep fighting would not allow him to simply just lay there idle. Shaking his head, Kim Kaphwan rolled back and set himself to his feet. Fighting through the building pain, the Taekwondo fighter now rushed right in for Raphael again as he unleashed a mighty yell of strength. Upon meeting Raphael once more, Kim turned with his hips and he jabbed his right and left arm outward, intending on striking the Terrapin onto his face.

Raphael twirled his sai within his hands, and gripped them with the pointed ends of his weapons facing upwards. A grin appeared on his face as Kaphwan came at him. Quickly, Raphael moved his arms, using his forearms to block away at the punches. He had to admit, Kim was pretty fast but he didn’t seem to have many hand techniques and tended to focus more on kicking. Kim quickly then swung his left leg diagonally for the red masked Turtle’s head, performing another roundhouse but Raphael leaned back away from the incoming strike. Following up with this, he turned to a spin and then swung his right leg across, again going for the Turtle’s head, but Raphael hunched down from the kick and bolted up once more. Kim quickly leapt forward and snapped his right leg up in a jumping front kick, only to then have it slapped down by Raphael who quickly moved his right hand down, blocking the strike.

However, Kim Kaphwan moved his arms out and firmly placed them down onto the Turtle’s shoulders—somersaulting over him and landed feet first onto the ground, only to then flip back over towards the ring post behind himself and leapt, flipping back onto the top before he pushed himself off from it, taking to the air once more. This sudden change in tactic caught Raphael off guard, as he turned and raised his sights to watch his opponent. That’s when Kim coming down like a comet, kicking his legs out for the Turtle.

“HISHOU KYAKU!”

Raphael widened his eyes and immediately dove to his right, opting to get out of the way rather than try and guard against an attack like that. Kim stomped onto the mat, causing it to tremor briefly for a moment.

“C’mon, Raph! You got this!” Donatello shouted, clapping as he cheered.

The red masked ninja made a mad dash for his opponent, and as he zeroed in on him, Raphael swung his left arm across with his elbow bent out. Kim raised his right arm up and clenched it firmly as it made impact, blocking the strike as best as he could. In retaliation, Kim turned with his weight and unleashed two jabs for the ninja’s head, but Raphael weaved from side to side, returning the favor as he swung his left and then his right, his sai handles firmly gripped in his hands, striking Kim hard across the face. Fighting through the pain, Kim raised his left leg up and aimed to swing it down for Raphael’s head but the Turtle positioned his right arm up and held it horizontally, blocking the kick but he sneakily moved his right leg forward and behind Kim’s standing leg, dragging it back and he pushed forward with his arms, causing the Taekwondo fighter to fall back.

Raphael quickly moved his arms out, now grabbing Kim as he fell back by his legs and slammed him to the mat. Immediately, the hot-headed Turtle would scramble to move onto the Taekwondo master and straddled onto his mid-section and Raphael quickly tossed his sai to the side, choosing to go at this bare handed. Without a moment’s hesitation, he already would begin to then swing his arms down as he aimed for Kim’s head, beating his fist down onto the Korean fighter.

“HE’S GOT’EM!” Michelangelo exclaimed.

Raphael continued to beat onto Kim’s head for a good twenty seconds, then scooted off from him and then positioned himself onto his carapace—only to move his hands and took hold of the Taekwondo fighter’s left leg and then entangled his own legs around that specific limb. Raphael set Kim’s leg over his right shoulder and positioned his hands onto Kim’s knee, and pushed down while his legs and shoulder provided stability as he pushed his hips up. Kim screamed out as he could feel his knee being put under strain, the Turtle threatening to break his leg. And Raphael applied only more pressure. Kim clenched his eyes firmly, and then slammed his left hand onto the mat. He conceded the match. Raphael released his grasp from his opponent’s leg.

Raphael stood with his arms raised as Leonardo, Michelangelo and Donatello rushed to the ring to embrace their brother for earning them another victory. After many hard earned victories, the Turtles would only progress further in the King of Fighters tournament.

A couple of hours had passed since the brothers had achieved a victory against Team Korea, and during that time a few matches had passed. The Turtles took this time to cool down and recall their experiences in this tournament. Never did they even so much as think that they would be able to compete with the likes of these types of fighters whom were able to wield powers that came from within. And this only inspired them to utilize all of their training and their own experiences to the best of their ability.

With their next match announced, the Turtles had been informed to where their next opponents would be awaiting for them. It hadn’t taken them too long to get there as they were quite familiar with the area they were designated to arrive. Surprisingly, the fight was set to take place at a Dave and Buster’s. Upon arrival, the Turtles were met with glowing lights and music from all of the arcade games which were flashing in the background.

“Dude, this is awesome! Maybe if we’re done, we can have some time to play?” Michelangelo asked gleefully.

“Focus Mikey, we’ve got another match ahead of us. If we can manage a win with this one, then maybe we can think about playing these games here.” Leonardo responded to his younger sibling.

“So where are the people we’re supposed to be fighting against?” Donatello asked, raising a hand over his eyes as he was searching.

“I think that’s them right over there.” Raphael spoke, pointing the thumb on his right hand out to a group who seemed to be approaching them.

Approaching the Turtles would be a group of four individuals, a young blond haired man sporting a red, black and white jacket with black attire underneath. There would be another man who appeared to be Afro-Latino, sporting a prominent pompadour and donned a white Karate gi with a black belt tied over his waist. The other was a young woman who appeared to be Japanese, with large pig tails and red bows tied to each one and wore what appeared to be a Chinese Kempo uniform. And lastly, would be an attractive blonde who wore a purple dress that had one of her legs exposed from the side.

“So, you Turtle cosplayers are our competition?” The blonde haired man with the jacket inquired.

“I guess you’re the opposing team we’re told to meet here.” Raphael responded.

“Been hearing a lot of buzz about you guys… Heard you’re good. Real good.” The young man replied.

“Hey, Rock! Aren’t you going to introduce us?” The blonde haired woman inquired.

“Right… I’m Rock Howard. The others? Khushnood Butt, Hotaru Futaba, and Bonne Jenet.”

Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael then looked over to each other and nodded. Leo looked over to Rock and then he raised up a finger, gesturing for him to have a minute with his siblings. Rock nodded as he also turned to look over to his own team mates as the Turtle now huddled in with the rest of his brothers. The siblings hunched and placed their arms over their shells, and would only speak in whispers.

“Alright, we’ve come a very long way… We nearly bought it with the Fatal Fury team. We know what kind of opposition we’re up against in this tournament. But we can’t get careless. I want to think we learned from our mistakes. So we need to be on our toes here.” Leonardo whispered.

“Understood. I’m still trying to figure out how these people are able to manipulate their bio-electricity to perform these superhuman feats and using it to create these energy projectiles.” Donatello nodded.

“Dude, who the hell cares about that? We gotta keep up the heat. Leo’s got a point.” Raphael muttered.

“Assuming these guys know how to release those projectiles and manipulate energy, I think we can use some things as cover. Besides, tournament sponsors said they’d pay for the damages.” Leo spoke.

“So who’s up to bat first?” Michelangelo asked.

The Turtles looked up to see the other team discussing on who was going first, and realized that they were done talking. Rock stepped forward as he then slipped on a pair of fingerless gloves onto his hands. Leonardo then looked over to his brothers, took in a light breath of air through his nostrils and released a sigh from within.

“That’d be my cue I guess.” He whispered.

Leonardo stepped over to where Rock seemed to be approaching, and the two had paused in their movements only to begin sizing each other up. Rock slowly nodded as he now took a step back and rolled his shoulders.

“Heard that your team beat Terry’s… That’s pretty impressive. But don’t get the wrong idea. Just cause you guys fought Terry’s team and won, doesn’t mean you fought me and my team.”

Leonardo blinked at Rock’s confidence, and the red masked ninja slowly nodded his head. That much was most certainly true; he had to give the young man that one right there. If he didn’t know any better, Leonardo would say that might have been words spoken to psyche him out. He knew better than to let that get the best of him. The red masked Turtle looked over his left shoulder, now peering to his brothers.

Michelangelo gave off a beaming grin, almost looking like a Halloween Jack-O’Lantern as he raised his hands and held his two thumbs up. Donatello nodded to Leonardo, reassuring his brother that he had redeemed himself in the previous fight against Team Korea and that he was able to handle himself. Raphael clasped his hands, cracking his knuckles as he nudged his head up and then raised his left fist to cheer his brother on.

“And you haven’t fought me and my team… So are we doing this?” Leonardo asked.

Rock chuckled and nodded as he now snapped back into his own fighting stance, bouncing on his feet as he stared to the red masked Terrapin. Leonardo then moved his arms up over his carapace and took hold of the red braided cloth handles of his twin swords, and drew them from their sheathes.  He spun the blades within his hands, gripping them to stop them from moving as he then also entered into his own fighting stance.

Rock Howard stepped forward, and took off into a run towards the mutant Red Ear Slider. Leonardo stood his ground, breathing calmly as he now dashed forward and took to his own run at his opponent.

Both team leaders collided, igniting the battle between the Turtles and Team Garou.

The next part in my Mirage TMNT storyline has finally been written up and I am so very glad that it is, because I had a relatively hard time in writing out who the next opposing team is and after a crushing victory against Team Korea, I needed to figure out where to go with this particular battle. So then I had recalled the characters from SNK's Garou: Mark of the Wolves game, and figured why not make a team compositing of characters from that game to fight the Mirage Turtles? Naturally, there were some characters on this team who were not on this database, such as Khushnood Butt and Hotaru Futaba, who I had to add in last night.

So the Turtles have already defeated Team Kyokugen, Team Psycho Soldier, Team Fatal Fury, and Team Korea-- so now they're going up against what I call Team Garou.

For new readers who are just hopping onto this storyline here, I suggest you look at the Mirage TMNT Respect Thread to see what the Mirage Turtles are more than capable of.

Leonardo is Low Tier Superhuman in terms of physicals. Think Above Peak Human due to his mutation and training.

Leonardo possesses his Twin Ninjaken, Shurikens, Smoke Bombs, and Kunai.

Rock Howard is in Peak Conditioning due to his training.

Rock Howard has his moveset from the Garou and KOF games.

Raphael is a pretty brutal fighter Rakai, but I like how you worked to describe his style in this match, as he is certainly the rougher, more urban fighter compared to the polish the other three have. For Raph, I can see his restraint in his battles, but also his combat sense, as he takes a lot from upper body fighting styles like boxing, while also blending in techniques from Muay Thai, wrestling and various other lower body styles like Taekwondo as well, he certainly is a well rounded fighter in spite of his preferences in combat. Kim was no slouch here as you described him either, as he gave Raph quite a bit of trouble, even if he didn't do the same amount of damage to Raph, as Raph did to him, so the match did have some close points. The trick kick maneuver, that Kim pulled on Raph was well done, and could have put the turtle down, or at least did some serious damage to him, if Raph didn't have his shell, so Kim definitely deserves some props for that one. All that aside, you do good work man, and I like how you work in the recap, the story, and the intensity into your fights, it feels almost like a fight commentator's at times. Keep doing what you're doing man, you do have great potential.

Rock is certainly going to be a challenge for Leo here, even more so than perhaps some of his other opponents in this tournament, as Rock is both described and seen in the games to be a very well rounded, fast and versatile fighter in combat. What Leo has however, is greater durability for sure, a perhaps more in depth combat typed mind, and ultimately perhaps more power than Rock does in how he operates. Beyond that, it is worth noting that Leo could certainly gain the edge over Rock via his more specific pursuits in other combat types and subjects. To break that last statement down a bit more, Rock being versatile is a great attribute to him, but versatility can be a double edged sword too, as to be too versatile in too many types and forms of combat, does allow those who have mastered certain combat skills and types, even if they have only truly mastered and devoted themselves to one type, to both overcome and surpass their opponent by innovating and mastering a type better than those who spend their time mastering many or all others. Thus, Leo could certainly outfox Rock, even if Rock is more versatile, by using a more well trained set of skills as opposed to many, because Rock, assumingly, didn't master it to the same exact degree Leo did, due to his training in other skills as well.

Thank you for commenting Z451! It's always good to hear your input when it comes to my matches. Writing up Raphael vs Kim Kaphwan wasn't really too hard, especially considering Kim's fighting style and his gameplay revolves around more kicks than anything else, as he really doesn't tend to have any punching techniques. Also, it helps that I studied martial arts in my life, specifically Tang Soo Do, which can be considered the ancestor art to what Taekwondo is. I knew a lot of the kicks which Kim Kaphwan used, even had to choreograph how they were executed in application just to write them down. Also, Raphael is definitely the more rougher of the brothers, so i wanted to emphasize the kind of power which he wields in upclose combat but he also has to pull it back because he is in a tournament setting and not to mention, so far, aside from Team Fatal Fury, no one else has really given him the incentive to lose his edge to where he would really get rough on anyone.

I felt that maybe Team Korea was a step down after the Mirage Turtles fought Team Fatal Fury, and I felt like that this was unfortunately reflected in the votes. So because of this, I wanted to pick a team which would be challenging for the Turtles, especially considering that they managed to defeat Team Fatal Fury though it was Raphael who carried the team through. Rock is definitely someone who I thought would be an interesting opponent for Leonardo, and you mentioned quite a lot which describes Rock well enough, as he utilizes some moves from Terry Bogard and his father, Geese Howard although he isn't as powerful as the latter. And while Rock has a variety of skills in his arsenal, there also comes something which does need to be addressed.

Experience.

As far as I know, both the AOF/Fatal Fury and King of Fighters timelines and continuities, Rock is considerably younger than Terry Bogard and therefore-- not as experienced as Terry is 24 years old by Fatal Fury 3 and the KOF series, and 35 years old in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, where as Rock is 17 years old in both Garou: Mark of the Wolves and KOF XIV.

Leonardo already has more experience than Rock even by the time he was 17, as at the age of thirteen, Leonardo already was on missions which involved fighting hired mercenary ninjas to rescue a dying samurai's son from a corrupt Japanese business man, and when he was 15, Leonardo already became a full fledged ninja when he and the other Turtles killed the Purple Dragons, then proceeded to challenge the Shredder and his Foot ninja-- and the rest they say is history, as Leonardo fought Mousers, Utrom soldiers, Triceraton aliens, other mutants-- etc. And this goes well on until Vol. 4, where Leonardo is in his thirties.

But thank you for your comments, I appreciate them!

Rock is a pretty tough customer but I don’t think he’s quite at Terry’s level yet, I know some people will say that since he regularly spars with Terry then Rock should scale to him, but for all we know Terry could just be holding back because he doesn’t want to hurt Rock. Plus Rock has literally no other feats to suggest he’s on his adopted dad’s level. Thusly I must give the fight to Leo, by feats he’s faster, more durable, and has much greater experience.

Not a team I would have predicted. Nice to be surprised. I think that Rock is by far the most formidable member of the team. His relative lack of experience will be a challenge as well as the fact that at this point all the moves he has picked up from Terry have now been seen by the Turtles already. He will probably have to rely more on the the Reppuuken and the Raging Storm. On the other hand, just because you have seen and dealt with the Buster Wolf doesn't mean it still won't hurt if its landed.

I think Rock has the potential to topple Leonardo, but he would probably lose more times then he would win.

Yeah, I wanted to do something different which not even has been done in any of the official KOF games, and that was having a Garou team. I know that Rock has been featured in the Garou games and so far only one KOF game, not counting KOF All Star for mobile-- and as far as I know, only Hotaru Futaba has been seen in a KOF game too. Team Garou would be serving as the second Team Fatal Fury. I felt that Team Korea might have been a step down after Team Fatal Fury, so I figure why not do something which is a step up from that, maybe something on par with Team Fatal Fury-- and so Team Garou felt natural.

I'm also glad that you picked up on the fact that the Turtles are getting used to fighting other martial artists, this is something which I think is going to be crucial when the Turtles face other challenges such as the Marvel and DC heroes, if this arc ever gets that far. I feel like on the CBUB, in order for a character who is either from an Indy comic, Movie, Anime or Cartoon-- they have to fight a lot of people before fighting a Marvel or DC character who is street level. In my mind, in the CBUB, Marvel and DC are king and it's VERY difficult to take even the weakest Marvel or DC character out-- at least, that's how I remember it from ten to fifteen years ago.

Thanks for commenting, JohnnyChany.

Another great set-up, Rakai! As the Raph/Kaphwan recap shows, you really know how to detail the intensity and urgency of H2H combat.

As for this match, Leo should probably win here. As mentioned, Rock may not be quite on par skill- and power-wise to Terry Bogard, and Leo has surely learned of such moves and power from his defeat by Terry in the previous round.
