Mmm rewatching that episode he just seems more awkward and unsure of being a stepfather. Until Talky Tina starts being freaky then he starts turning more jerkish, but I don't blame him. Creepy dolls are creepy

Yeah Archer would be stronger here.

He's a naturalist in a lot of ways, and would likely know much about both how to survive and how to survive well in most situations.

Added to that, Archer is a leader strong enough to continually inspire his comrades and Alan, perhaps, that he will lead them back to Gorgon on faith alone.
