August 2020 CBUB Tournament

Fox

Recommended Posts

The August 2020 CBUB Tournament will have a theme.

To compete in the Tourney the player must create TWO tournament matches (and only two - no more, no less) and follow the theme.

THEME:

Players may only use characters in the Tournament from Television shows (including Music Videos - MTV), Movies, Video Games and Commercials released in the decade of the 1980's.

Examples:
Star Wars was released in 1977.  However Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were released in the 1980's. Therefore, most Star Wars characters are fair game.  Same with Christopher Reeves Superman.

Charlie's Angels was a show that ran 1976 - 1981. The show ran into the 1980's, therefore, Charlie's Angels characters from that show are fair game.

Players should use the 1980's version in their character image to provide authenticity.

If there is a question of whether the character is from the 1980's, Fox shall be the final arbiter.

Failure to use 1980's characters will disqualify the match from Tournament consideration.

Matches:

Players will create Two Tournament matches in the month of August with the above theme. No more than Two, no less than Two.

Prizes:

1 Grand Prize - $200 Amazon Gift Card.

1 2nd place Prize - $100 Amazon Gift Card.

2 match total.

And we could either do the same 0-0 idea

Or

We can only use characters from a certain genre (comics, games, etc.)

Or

We only do one match and all competitors have to use the same character. Just pick one and then you judge who used them the best.

OR (sorry ideas are just coming at me)

2 match total and they have to go together...

A setup that has a conflict that is not resolved by fighting but rather a contest of wits or endurance.

So basically any of my matches from the June tournament would be along the lines of what you're suggesting.

RNG matches?

Make people break from their regular writing styles?

Set up, like a lottery or something with 2 different categories.... Characters and Genre

So you could get...  Genie from Aladdin vs Sherlock Holmes in a horror match..or something

You mean we randomize it? Like they get two random characters and have to make a setup out of it? That could be dope!

For example, after spinning the wheel and loading the generator we get....

Buzz Lightyear vs Wonder Woman in a Heist Match.

The World Bank, 100 trillion dollars, all for the taking...This Summer, an epic Heist match.. Who will walk away with 100 trillion dollars? Follow expert toy astronaut Buzz Lightyear as he tries out maneuver and outsmart one of DC's most wonderful women. Who will be the winner? You decide.

Coming to a local Forum Page near you, this August 2020.

Gee, I don't know.  The contestants still have to produce good writing.  I rate tournament matches solely on the writing.

Seems like randomization would potentially put some players at a handicap.  A disadvantage they could not write their way out of without a lot of contivances.

It could be fun though. And it forces you to be creative in your setups. Which often make you a better writer in the long run.

But it's still hard to do. Like, how do you know if people are really randomizing their own characters? We would have to trust everyone.

I do share our webmaster's concern. It could seriously handicap someone to get a character they know nothing about, or just a really lame character no one likes.

And it might be hard to make a match between Superman and Porky Pig.

1st Place for July tournament gets 7 extra spins

2nd place gets 5

3rd place gets 4

4th place gets 3

Everyone else gets 2 extra spins.

More of a 90's guy myself, but I'm down for 80s content.

Yeah, but how would that work? Superman was created in the 30's, but he was in publication during the 80's.

Do we go by publication date, creation date, etc?

EDIT*

-DUH- I didn't read the second part, tv shows and movies is a good idea.

Yep.  Superman would be Christopher Reeve, I imagine.  I think Superman II came out in the 80's.

Well, I'm going to go with that.

Here's hoping for a MANIMAL vs. AUTOMAN match.  OK, nevermind... that might just be too much 80's.

Quick question regarding the rules on this: Are we limited to only films and TV shows from the '80's, or could we also possibly include characters/scenarios/etc. from '80's commercials, games, music video, etc.?

Sure.  That seems fine.
