Mummies vs Vampires!

“And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”

In what would later be designated at A+0.0.0, or simply Zero, the meteors rained down on Earth. Astronomers would have noticed a series of blurs originating in the vicinity of the Reiner Gamma formation, near the moon’s equator, but none raised the alarm as it wasn’t a particularly newsworthy event. Interestingly, if anyone had been doing a poll of astrologers, they would have been surprised to find a majority had read the strange alignment in the stars as an ominous portent.

They were right.

It was a good night, at least by Southern California standards, but Harris was concerned only with the perfect darkslide 1080. This meant three complete skateboard and body rotations before landing on a thin handrail and sliding down with his right foot on the nose and his left on the tail.

Not impossible, but conceivably close given he wasn’t a very good skater. But Ira was there, and he wanted her to see him at least attempt the impossible even if it meant him landing on his face. Her lean body and blond hair under her usual dark red cap had kept Harris up for many a night and he was sure at this point he’d do anything just for a glance his way.

Harris was airborne when the first meteor hit. This one was a small one, approximately five feet in diameter but still kicked up a cloud nearly seven kilometres high and wide. Those closest, the skaters, died immediately from the impact and shockwaves. Incredibly however Harris was thrown around the curve of the skate park’s pipe and apart from breaking both his legs and arms, and suffering severe concussion despite his helmet, was fine.

He lay there gasping for breath as his brain struggled to comprehend what had just happened and why he couldn’t move.

And that’s when the secondary effect of the day they would call Zero occurred. Portals to Hell opened at the points of impact. Not in any figurative or metaphorical way, but in a very real, very terrifying way.

Harris looked around him to see some of the former skaters slowly rise up. Their broken limbs cracked and snapped as they lurched, and their awful, bloodied faces slowly turned to look at him. Harris screamed, but his broken legs and arms refused to help him move even an inch away from the stumbling and growling figures. The last sight he saw was of a shock of blond hair under a familiar red cap, and then teeth started tearing into him.

Some of London’s finest restaurants survived the blast.

The Gauvine Bar and Grill had hosted celebrities and politicians for more than 100 years and boasted some of the finest and freshest oysters and steaks that London offered. Amazingly, though the buildings on either side of it had been destroyed in the initial blast that had demolished London, the Gauvine had stood relatively unscathed.

Pierre Nouvelle was the current Head Chef of the restaurant and could only watch in horror as he opened the doors and stared at the ruins of the once bustling city. No matter where his eyes turned, there was only horror.

A bicycle leaning against a crumbling wall, with a bloodied pair of legs and waist but nothing above still in the saddle. Opposite he saw Mr. Eric Steinfeld from the Steinfeld Jewellery store emerge from the rubble of his ruined shop; the blast had kicked up a swirling maelstrom of jewels and precious stones that had embedded themselves in the shop owner, and he now stumbled around glittering under the fading sun.

Pierre looked around sharply as he suddenly felt a presence beside him. He looked up into the eyes of a tall smartly dressed man. There was not a drop of blood or smearing of dust on the man’s refined clothes, and Pierre simply couldn’t make sense of it.

The man smiled at him, and his deep voice suggested an aristocratic upbringing.

“My, what a delightful smell.”

Pierre simply couldn’t find the words to respond. What was happening? His eyes darted to the chaos in the street and then back to the man in front of him.

At a loss for words, Pierre simply choked out “I think we’re closed.”

The man laughed, and despite all the horror around him, Pierre found himself wanting to laugh along with the charismatic stranger.

“Oh, I wasn’t talking about your restaurant.”

The stranger’s grin widened, and Pierre could see sharp deadly fangs slowly extend out. He tried to step away from the man, but the other had suddenly gripped him by the shirt with both hands.

I didn’t even see him move was Pierre’s last thought as the stranger sprang forward and sunk his teeth into the head chef’s neck.

What followed was all-out slaughter. The demons and denizens of Hell against humanity, who had already for a large part been broken by the deadly meteors.

Soon they gained the upper hand, and humanity was either destroyed, made into slaves, or pushed back to remote hiding spots around the earth. Different zones demarcated which monster was dominant in each area – and once the sport of hunting humans had dwindled, they turned on each other. Using their new slaves and their awesome powers, they waged a terrible war that soon spread across the entire planet.

Factions were formed and broken as tides turned, and various powers wrestled for territory.

One such war was about to happen in the open regions of France. The Vampires, who now dominated much of Northern Europe had come face to face with the Mummies who had spread from Northern Africa and consumed much of Southern Europe.

Where once there had been a fragile truce, these awesome beings now fought for one goal only: the utter destruction of the other side.  Peons and armies fought throughout Europe and, on June the 17^th, fifteen years after the meteors had first dropped, their leaders met in a clash in an open field.

Three mummies and three vampires crossed the open field of Verdun, which had seen so much blood during the World Wars. They faced each other with deadly intent in their eyes, none saying a word as they gathered their powers to them.

The world seemed to hold its breath for a moment, and then they unleashed all hell on the other team. Magic, firepower and ancient weapons demolished that ancient battlefield and, in the end, there could be only one side left standing.
