How would you handle it? I figured this would be a fun topic for here

Go in with shields already raised. Broadcast a message on all frequencies we are on a search and rescue mission. Evasive maneuvers. Lock tractor beam on the Kobayashi Maru get us back to Federation space. 

That would be my strategy.
