I think Yoshi actually kind of dominates here. He’s faster and can jump higher/farther than Mario. He also throws projectiles more often than Mario, so I think that gives him advantages in most categories

Well he for sure wins any race and it's honestly not even that close. In any game I can think of Yoshi is demonstrably faster than Mario. He also jumps a lot higher. The only real advantage Mario has is that he's probably smarter and may be stronger, but I don't think that matters. Mario might win something like whatever activity up there uses a gun, but Yoshi should be so dominant in any of the physical categories that it won't matter

Yeah, but it's trying to get top score in that game and I feel like Mario is close enough to Yoshi in most categories he can't beat him in, while being demonstrably better in other ones that Yoshi can't beat him in (anything that involves throwing/shooting.)

Jumping or running events definitely go to Yoshi. I guess shooting sports (is that usually a part of track and field? my high school track team lacked rifles) probably favors Mario.

Throwing sports are a toss-up. Yoshi does egg tossing, Mario throws fireballs.

I think, since track and field has many running and jumping events, that's where I place the advantage. So I'm going with Yoshi.
