Match 23001 Sam Wilson vs. The Shredder (2003)

Chapter 88: A Shield and A Tekkō-kagi

 

 

After the attack on Starfleet in Yorktown Base, the Federation was left scrambling. While Ethan managed to wound Tomax and Xamot, the nefarious Xenia Onatopp managed to kill Jane Carter and set off the bioweapon with the remote in her possession. The former Soviet assassin escaped in chaos along with the brothers. Despite being wounded himself, Ethan managed to lead many to safety while several others died from the exposure to the weapon. As for the former Charlie's Angel, she escaped before being exposed to the weapon. Before she could find Xenia, Madison was confronted by a dangerous foe. Despite all her skills and training, Riley Hicks was nothing compared to the former Charlie's Angel. Madison Lee defeated Riley with ease and left the corrupt D.S.S. agent dead. Madison escaped to safety but failed to enact her vengeance on Xenia. The survivors of the devastating attack fled from the base as the bioweapon spread. Many lives were lost and Starfleet's role in the universal conflict had become compromised. 

 

While the attack on Yorktown was a devastating blow against Starfleet and its many allies, the corruption that still plagued the world's governments was ever present. Many leaders refused to lend aid or help in the fallout. This corruption was not only on Earth but spread throughout many galactic systems. Despite the setback of corrupt leaders, there were still many allies willing to help even with the pushback of government leaders. 

 

One of these allies was Sam Wilson. After the tragedy that befell London, Sam had to step up in his role as a symbol. The shield and mantle that once belonged to Steve Rodgers was not passed down to Sam Wilson. It was a role that he was not entirely ready to accept, but it was one that he felt needed to be filled in these days of chaos. Sam had fought many battles alongside his friend and mentor but after Steve's death in London, the Avenger found himself in a new role. He knew picking up the shield would come with a heavy burden. It was a burden that he struggled to carry in the days since Steve's death. The red, white, and blue took on a new meaning as Sam would have to be another kind of symbol for individuals across the globe. It was the symbol of social responsibility for all. It was that responsibility that weighed on him the most. He had doubts, but he knew that someone had to take up the shield. He knew that someone had to take up that responsibility to keep fighting against evil. He knew that he had to take up the mantle of Captain America. 

 

After taking up the shield, he made it a goal not to be aligned with any government in this world as he did not want to get caught up in the corrupt bureaucracy that many find themselves in. The new Captain America took to the skies and carried the shield. Even though he knew that his new role would draw comparisons to Steve and come along with criticism of many kinds, he was determined to do his best. He was going to keep fighting, no matter how big the enemy was or how dangerous the obstacles were. 

 

With the world still consumed in the corruption of the universal conflict, Sam found an area where he could lend a hand. While many world leaders turned away from lending a hand with Starfleet and the survivors of the Yorktown Base attack, Sam decided to step up in their time of need. Whether it was providing food, medical supplies, clothing, or other gear; the new Captain America focused his efforts on providing aid to the survivors of the Yorktown tragedy. 

 

That is where Sam found himself now. He was far from Earth, but in a world that opened itself to the survivors of the Yorktown Tragedy. This land was known as Prydain. During this time, Sam sought out a distraught Ethan Hunt and the two did the best that they could to help with the survivors of Yorktown. As they helped, Ethan did the best that he could to distract himself from the failure in stopping Tomax and Xamot's plans as well as trying to distract himself from the loss of Jane Carter. 

 

During their short time of providing aid and assistance to the survivors, Sam could not help but notice the guilt that Ethan was carrying. With his experience as a social worker and his time with veterans, Sam wanted to talk to Ethan. Before Sam had the opportunity to speak with the legendary IMF agent, the new Captain America was confronted by his winged companion, Redwing. His feathered friend swooped down from the sky and perched on his shoulder. Seeing his companion, Sam realized that Redwing was in distress.

 

With his connection with the falcon, Sam was able to see what caused the distress in his feathered companion. Outside of the refuge area for the Yorktown survivors, Redwing spotted a threatening presence. Sam’s eyes shifted from Ethan toward the area away from the camp.

 

Before taking to the skies, the Avenger sent out a message to other comrades in the camp. High up in the sky, Captain America flew alongside Redwing as they headed toward the area where the falcon had seen the hostiles. After descending from the skies, Sam looked in all directions while Redwing circled around the area. Even though it was clear, Sam felt something was off. His grip tightened on that Vibranium shield as he steadily walked around the area.

 

 Suddenly, a dark figure leapt from the trees. The figure was clad in dark clothing with a katana gripped tightly in his hands. The figure was fast and silent. If it was not for the shriek of Redwing, there was a chance that Sam would not have known of the figure’s attack. Captain America spun around and placed that Vibranium shield between him and his attack. The katana clanked as it collided with the shield and the falcon flew towards the head of the attacker. From what he could see, the attacker appeared to be a ninja.

 

“Just my luck! A damn ninja!” Sam groaned as he faced off against his attacker.

 

With his skills, abilities and the use of the shield along with Redwing’s help; Sam was able to defeat the ninja with ease. Even though the battle was short, Sam could not shake the feeling that there was a much worse threat lurking in the distance. He gazed down upon the ninja’s unconscious body and saw a symbol etched into the forehead on the mask. It was the symbol of the Foot Clan.

 

“You got to be kidding me!”

 

Captain America shook his head in disbelief as he took a step back and gazed over at his feathered friend.

 

“The damn Foot Clan is here! Those guys… I’ve read about them… They are no joke!”

 

“And we are not the only one’s here, Captain!” A sinister voice called out from behind.

 

Sam turned his head and saw a large outline walking out from the foliage. The figure appeared to be that of a towering man with razor-sharp, samurai-inspired metal armor with blades on his gauntlets, shoulders, and a menacing metallic mask. Captain America quickly realized that this was the leader of the Foot Clan.

 

“What the hell are you doing here, Shredder?!” Sam growled as his brow furrowed.

 

Ignoring the question, the Supreme Leader of the Foot Clan inched close toward Captain America while preparing to slay the Avenger.

 

“You carry the shield and wear the symbol of a hero, Captain, but like all the heroes that have come before and all the heroes that will come after, you will bleed out before your death.” Shredder hissed as he glared at the Avenger.

 

“Maybe... But like an old friend of mine once said, the price of freedom is high and that is a price that I am willing to pay! I can do this all day!” Sam declared while standing tall with Redwing perch on his shoulder and the Vibranium shield gripped firmly in his hands.  

 

“You are a weak fool!” Shredder shouted.

This battle takes place after the events of Ethan Hunt’s confrontation of Tomax and Xamot as well as Jane Carter’s defeat at the hands of Xenia Onatopp and Madison Lee’s victory over Riley Hicks. While Ethan managed to thwart some of the attack, the bioweapon still claimed many lives in the Yorktown Base. The survivors escaped to a world with a land called Prydain

 

Meanwhile, Sam Wilson has volunteered to go to Prydain to provide aid to the survivors. He has recently taken up the shield after the death of Steve Rogers during the attack in London and Steve’s battle with Durge.

 

While helping with survivors, Sam is alerted by Redwing of a possible threat in an outer perimeter. Sam flies to the area and has a quick battle with a Foot Clan ninja. Sam defeats the ninja but is soon confronted by Shredder.

 

Sam Wilson-Captain America – is armed with the Vibranium shield. He also has Redwing by his side along with his wings.

 

Shredder has his armor and bladed gauntlet.

Ooh, good matchup. The shield is no joke and becomes an invaluable asset to pretty much everything that can hold it in its hands that is also a good hand-to-hand combatant, but I think Shredder edges out Sam specifically, even with the addition of the vibranium shield. Something tells me that this specific Shredder is more skilled, more powerful, stronger, more willing to use deadly force, hell maybe even faster despite lacking the movement tech of Falcon.
