THE DRUG WARS PART 2: A GANGLAND SIDE STORY

Nino Brown and Tobias Whale, the two drug kingpins brought in by Tombstone, walked around the New Jack Club, Nino was a frequent patron of the nightclub established in the Warehouse District after Tombstone took over, it was even named in his honor.

On this night, Nino wore his blue track suit, black kangol beret, and large gold chain around his neck. Tobias was also in blue, although more pale than Nino’s, as he moved around in a custom suit that not only somehow fit around his massive frame but actually made him look more presentable.

Nino pointed around. “Did I ever tell you Tobias? That "Tombstone called it The New Jack because he thinks it brings in my crowd. I told him that's backwards. My crowd makes the place worth coming to."

It was clear from the beginning that Nino was more interested in the atmosphere than the reason for their attendance that night.

“You ever noticed something about this place, Tobias?” asked Nino.

“I’m sure you’re going to tell me.”

“Everybody comes here thinking there somebody,” stated Nino. “Then I walk in and they remember who actually runs things around here.”

Nino puffed out his chest a little. Tobias gave him a slide glance.

“Runs things for Tombstone,” Nino added.

Nino Brown’s alpha personality was never far from the surface. He knew Tobias had bigger ambitions as well, that he really believed Tombstone should be working for him and not the other way around although Tobias would never say it publicly.

"I still say this meeting is a waste of my damn time,”" said Nino

“You haven't attended it yet."

"I don't need to attend a surrender to recognize one.”"

"Negotiation isn't surrender,” Tobias countered. “It’s practical.”

"Three drug organizations sitting around a table deciding who gets to poison which neighborhood?" Nino mused. "That's surrender with refreshments."

Tobias remained calm. “The Triad gained territory in Gangland before we had a real chance to establish ourselves. Didn't even ask permission from the other crime lords before taking Two-Face's territory. That interests me."

"It interests me too. Means somebody needs to remind them whose streets they're walking on.,” Nino stated.

“Or it means they're considerably more aggressive than we initially believed, and we need to account for that.”

Nino scoffed. "You're scared of them?"

Tobias gave him a cold look. "No.I’m willing to meet in a room with them because I would rather face that aggression head on then have it attack me from behind.”

The two men reached a private VIP meeting room on the west side of the club.

Tobias regarded Nino. You want every street flooded with our product?"

"Damn right,” answered Nino.

“Then the Triad floods the streets beside us. The cartels flood the streets behind us. Suddenly everyone's fighting over corners, soldiers, shipments and customers,” Tobias stated.

"That's what soldiers are for,” Nino reasoned.

“Soldiers cost money, and endless violence scares the money supply away,” Tobia reasoned. "Real power isn't owning every corner, Nino. Real power is knowing which corners matter."

“What if the cartel and the Triad think the same corners matter that we do?” asked Nino.

“They would need to reconsider that notion for their own profitability,” Tobias answered.

Back in the Employee area of the New Jack Club, waitress and bottle girl, Foxy Brown, walked through the narrow hallway behind the bar past the liquor crates to the room that contained the employee lockers. She gathered her things for the evening and was soon joined by her cousin, Coffy. Coffy didn’t work for the New Jack, but the Mercy Ward nurse was no stranger to this section of the nightclub.

Foxy shook her head. “I told you, you can’t keep coming back here. You’re going to get me in trouble.”

“We need to talk,” said Coffy.

Foxy looked at her. "You've got that look."

"What look?"

"The one you get when you're deciding whether a man deserves a bullet or two,” said Foxy.

Coffy was straight to the point. "I've been seeing junkies all day. Christine keeps trying to save them. I keep wondering how many people have to walk through that door before somebody starts removing the men who put them there."

Foxy immediately understood. “Nino and Whale.”

“That fat bastard will get his soon enough, but I’m focused on Nino. He needs to pay for what he has done to this district,” Coffy declared.

“"He's not at the top,” said Foxy.

"No. But he's the face,” stated Foxy. “Everyone on the streets knows Nino. They may not know Whale or even Tombstone, but they know Nino Brown.  You cut off the head of a snake, another one grows. "But if you break the arm carrying the poison, somebody notices. It sends a message.”

"You're talking about killing Tombstone’s top distributor in his district.”

“I’m talking about stopping him.”

"Those aren't always the same thing. Do you really think killing him will make a difference?”

Coffy looked to the ground. "You haven't seen what I've seen. Sometimes you have to take a stand.”

“Yes, but you need to be careful. I am so close to..”

Coffy was confused “Close to what?”

“Why do you think I took this job? Because I enjoy serving drinks to Tombstone's friends?" asked Foxy.

"I know why you're here."

"Do you? I've been watching this place since the doors opened. Watching who comes in. Who gets private meetings. Which guards change shifts." She gestured toward the ceiling. "Every man who walks through that door is another thread. Eventually one of those threads will lead me back to the man responsible for my boyfriend's death. To Tombstone himself, and I will find a way to pierce that concrete skin of his so he can know my pain.”

“Help me take out Nino, and I will help find a way for you to put down Tombstone,” Coffy offered.

“We might end up burning down this whole district.”

Coffy chuckled. “Good, then something better might come out of it.”

Back in the VIP meeting area of Club New Jack, Tobias sat with China White of the Triad and Elena Sanchez of the Rodriguez Cartel.  Nino Brown stood behind Tobias with barely contained disgust on his face. They were all surrounded by armed guards representing each faction.

"I'm pleased we could finally meet without anyone shooting at anyone,” stated Elena.

China White smiled faintly. "Give it time."

Tobias laughed.

”So the proposal is that Gangland is large enough for all of us to prosper,” Elena suggested.

"That's where you're wrong,” Nino interjected.  "Gangland belongs to whoever's strong enough to take it. Always has"

“Are there not 11 different districts here, all ruled by a different crime lord?” Elena asked. “Could the drug trade not work the same?”

"And how much territory do you believe would currently give your cartel free reign?” asked Tobias.

"Enough," answered Elena.

“"An interesting answer from someone proposing territorial boundaries," China White observed.

Elena smiled. “I don't believe in showing my entire hand during an opening negotiation."

Tobias appreciated that.: "Neither do I."

"Then perhaps we should stop pretending we're negotiating in good faith,” China White suggested. “"The Triad now has its own territory. These gentlemen here have their own territory through Tombstone. We have an established network to work from. What exactly does the Rodriguez Cartel have?"

Elena took a drink. "Access."

China White narrowed her eyes.  "Access to what?"

"Something that will become considerably more valuable once it is revealed,” Elena answered cryptically.

"Revealed?" Tobias repeated.

"You gentlemen are negotiating with us before the fact,” said Elena.  “That suggests you're expecting something to change. Everything changes eventually. And things in Gangland are changing by the day.” Elena gestured toward China White. “This white haired mujer can attest to that.”

China White smirked. “Very true.”

"So, we can establish boundaries now, and agree not to cross each other's boundaries,” stated Tobias.

"Provided those boundaries are respected,” said China White.

Elena nodded. "Of course."

Nino had heard enough.

"This is pathetic."

Everyone turned toward him.

"Why are we rolling out the red carpet for these bitches? When one of them just got here and the other doesn’t even belong to a district.”

Tobias’s head snapped over toward Nino. “Perhaps you were right earlier, and your time would be better spent elsewhere.”

“Fine,” said Nino as he walked to the door. “But you are wasting your time too. Looking for peace, go visit a cemetery.”

After Nino’s abrupt departure, Tobias regarded his two guests.

“I must apologize...”

China White cut him off. “No need. He was being honest. I can respect that.”

Two of Nino’s bodyguards accompanied him as he stomped through the club in frustration. They were approached by Foxy.

“Excuse me Mr. Brown, I just thought you should know we have a man downstairs who is running up a gambling debt in your name.”

“What?!?” Nino turned to his bodyguards. “Find out who that idiot is and put him down, hard!”

“Ok, follow me gentlemen.”

Foxy led Nino’s protection away from him. Nino walked over to the bar to get a drink and cool down. A beautiful woman with an afro and a low-cut cream-colored dress caught his eye.  He had not seen her before in the New Jack. Coffy sat nearby and took a sip of her drink. She eyed him for several seconds.

“You got something to say?” asked Nino.

“Not yet,” she replied.

The confidence that radiated from her immediately intrigued Nino. He walked closer to her.

“Most of the people around here aren’t comfortable enough to talk to me,” he stated.

Coffy was nonchalant in her response. “Most people around here aren’t comfortable enough doing much of anything. Too concerned about who is watching them do what.”

“And you?”

Coffy smiled seductively. “I prefer people who know what they want.”

Nino smiled in return.

“You look like a man who could use a better way to spend his evening,” said Coffy.

Nino chuckled. “I was just thinking that. What did you have in mind that I could be doing instead?”

Coffy tapped him on the chest. “I have some ideas I could share. But I would rather do it in a place that is quieter.”

The trap was sprung and Coffy resolved herself to eliminate the most recognizable drug dealer in Gangland that night, by any means necessary.

😁😜

Good set-up, Johnny. Good to see you haven't lost your touch.

Fortunately, I've been catching up on my blaxploitation and blaxploitation-adjacent movies in the past few years, so I've seen Foxy Brown, Coffy and New Jack City. Good CBUB Match debut for both Coffy and Nino Brown. As for the match, Coffy is just about a perfect counter for someone like Nino Brown: a honey trap. She'll use most of his vices against Brown and eventually set him up for the kill.

Whether she and her "cousin" Foxy can then take down the other heavy-hitter crime lords, though, is another matter.
