What If Powered Gyaos Replaced King Ghidorah in the Heisei Universe?

Welcome everyone to another Godzilla What If. Today, I'm exploring a scenario where Heisei King Ghidorah is replaced by Powered Gyaos and the Gamera monsters. For those unfamiliar, Powered Gyaos is a hybrid kaiju that appeared once in a Gamera manga, composed of all the foes Gamera fought during the Showa era.

This story will move at a brisk pace with fewer granular details to keep the narrative flowing. So, let's revisit Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)—but with a very different monster.

During the summer of 1992, an enormous unidentified flying object is sighted across Japan, from rural prefectures to the heart of Tokyo. While the media scrambles to explain the phenomenon, Kenichiro Terasawa—writer for Super Mystery Magazine MU—pursues a different lead. He seeks out Masukichi Ikehata, a World War II veteran who recently made headlines for protesting a dinosaur exhibit.

Ikehata recounts a startling story: in 1944, a dinosaur saved his garrison from an American assault on Lagos Island in the Marshall Islands. When Terasawa interviews Yasuaki Shindo, the former garrison commander and now powerful head of the Teiyo Group, Shindo confirms the tale. Terasawa develops a bold hypothesis: the creature encountered on Lagos was later exposed to fallout from the 1954 Bikini Atoll H-bomb tests, mutating it into Godzilla.

Meanwhile, the JSDF tracks the mysterious UFO as it crosses the Pacific. They discover it has approached Godzilla, who has remained dormant in the Sea of Japan since being weakened by Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria after his battle with Biollante in 1989. The craft eventually lands at Mount Fuji, where its occupants reveal themselves: Wilson and Glenchico, two Westerners, and Emmy Kano, a Japanese woman—all representatives of the Earth Union Organization (EUO), a global governing body from the year 2204.

They claim to have traveled through time aboard their vessel, MOTHER, to warn Japan of its grim future. According to them, unchecked industrialization and nuclear power will lead to Godzilla's resurgence and Japan's ultimate destruction. As proof, they present a future copy of Terasawa's own book, The Birth of Godzilla. With government approval, the Futurians propose a mission to 1944 Lagos Island to teleport the Godzillasaurus to the Bering Sea, preventing its mutation and altering history.

Joining the mission aboard MOTHER's sub-craft, KIDS, are Emmy, the Futurians' advanced android M11, and three observers from 1992: Terasawa, psychic Miki Saegusa, and paleontologist Professor Hironori Mazaki. The Futurians also bring along several genetically engineered animals—a turtle, a bird, a shark, a squid, a dog, and two lizards—for reasons they do not fully explain.

Arriving in 1944, the group covertly witnesses the brutal battle between Japanese forces and American Marines. The fighting awakens the Godzillasaurus, which charges into the fray. The Americans call for naval support, and destroyer shelling gravely injures the creature, though it manages to annihilate the ground troops. Miki confirms the dinosaur's identity, and the team prepares for teleportation.

Advancing one week, they observe the Japanese evacuation of the island, including Shindo's emotional farewell to the dying beast that saved his life. M11 then teleports the Godzillasaurus to the depths of the Bering Sea. As the group prepares to return to 1992, Emmy secretly releases the engineered animals onto Lagos Island.

Back in 1992, the disappearance of Godzilla confirms that the Futurians' mission has succeeded. Moments later, Glenchico announces an unexpected development: as Godzilla vanished, other monsters appeared across the Pacific and are now converging on Japan. The creatures—Gamera, Gyaos, Zigra, Viras, Jiger, Guiron, and Barugon—tear through Fukuoka and begin marching north through Kyushu.

While the government struggles to understand the connection between Godzilla's removal and the sudden emergence of these kaiju, Miki Saegusa reaches a chilling conclusion: the monsters are the Futurians' genetically engineered animals, mutated by nuclear testing. The Futurians are directly responsible for unleashing this new monster army.

Shaken by the devastation, Emmy confesses the truth to Terasawa. In her future, Japan has risen to become the dominant global superpower, its wealth and influence so vast that it purchases entire nations. To counteract its domination, people from around the world unite to form the Equal Environment Earth Union (EEEU), the political group to which the Futurians belong. They stole the time machine from the EUO to sabotage Japan's past. Their plan was to create a monster army and use it to coerce 20th-century Japan, preventing its rise. The story about Godzilla destroying Japan was a fabrication designed to force cooperation.

But Emmy reveals that Wilson has gone far beyond the original plan. Rather than merely weakening Japan, he now intends to annihilate it entirely using Gamera and the other monsters.

Desperate, the Japanese government devises a drastic countermeasure: mutate the Godzillasaurus into Godzilla, believing he is the only being capable of stopping the Futurians' monster horde. Despite public outcry, Shindo's Teiyo Group provides the nuclear-armed submarine Musashi-2 for "Operation G."

Before the plan can be executed, Miki senses something impossible—Godzilla himself at the bottom of the Bering Sea. Emmy suggests the dinosaur may have encountered radioactive material. Terasawa uncovers a clue in MU's archives: a Soviet nuclear submarine vanished in the same region where the Godzillasaurus was teleported. The implication is clear—the dinosaur was mutated anyway. Satellite thermal scans confirm an 80-meter Godzilla exactly where Miki sensed him.

Before the government can be warned, Godzilla destroys the Musashi-2, absorbs its nuclear payload, and grows even larger. Newly empowered, he comes ashore in Hokkaido.

Realizing Godzilla's rebirth was inevitable, Wilson and Glenchico dispatch their entire monster army—Gamera, Gyaos, Zigra, Viras, Jiger, Guiron, and Barugon—to intercept him near Abashiri. A colossal battle erupts. Godzilla fights ferociously, but the combined strength of the monsters begins to overwhelm him.

Aboard MOTHER, Emmy, Terasawa, and a reprogrammed M11 sabotage the monster control device. Godzilla seizes the opportunity and pummels the uncontrolled monsters. Gamera attempts to strangle him, but Godzilla breaks free and unleashes a supercharged atomic ray, obliterating the giant turtle.

Emmy confronts Wilson as his plan collapses. Wilson and Glenchico reveal that MOTHER is programmed to automatically return to the 23rd century within minutes. Though Gamera is lost, Wilson believes the newly empowered Godzilla will finish Japan off for them.

Emmy, Terasawa, and M11 subdue the Futurians and escape aboard KIDS. From there, M11 teleports MOTHER—with Wilson and Glenchico aboard—to Hokkaido, where it is destroyed by Godzilla.

The remaining monsters—Gyaos, Zigra, Viras, Jiger, Guiron, and Barugon—swarm Godzilla in a desperate final assault. Godzilla responds with a massive nuclear pulse, blasting them away and sending their battered bodies plunging into the Sea of Okhotsk.

Godzilla reaches Sapporo, where the JSDF deploys the MBT-MB92 Maser Cannons in a desperate attempt to halt his advance. Their beams scorch his hide, but they ultimately meet their end by the might of the nuclear titan. M11's simulations confirm the worst: Godzilla will continue his march until he reaches Tokyo.

Emmy proposes returning to her time and convincing the EUO to revive the defeated monsters in order to defend 20th-century Japan from Godzilla.

While she is gone, Godzilla reaches Tokyo and tears through the capital with unstoppable fury. In Shinjuku, atop his skyscraper penthouse, Shindo watches the destruction unfold. The man who rebuilt Japan now faces the wrath of the beast that once saved his life. Godzilla pauses, locking eyes with Shindo. Recognition passes between them—a silent, tragic acknowledgment of their shared past. Shindo closes his eyes, accepting his fate, as Godzilla's atomic ray engulfs him.

A brilliant flash splits the sky. Emmy returns in the KIDS craft—and she is not alone. Her mission succeeded. The surviving monsters' unstable DNA allowed them to fuse into a single being: Powered Gyaos.

The hybrid kaiju is a grotesque fusion of its components:
-Gyaos's body, wings, feet, and primary head.
-Guiron's blade-like head as the right arm.
-Viras's tentacled head as the left arm.
-Zigra's head embedded in its chest.
-Jiger and Barugon's heads extending from its back.

With EUO assistance, Emmy controls the creature through a collar around the Gyaos head.

Powered Gyaos descends into Shinjuku and clashes with Godzilla among the skyscrapers. It bombards him with attacks from distance before closing in, slashing and grappling in brutal hand-to-hand combat. Godzilla retaliates, tearing off the Jiger and Barugon heads. The battle rages on, with Powered Gyaos using Godzilla's tail to hurl him across the district. Exhausted and battered, Godzilla collapses.

Powered Gyaos charges a devastating finishing attack—but Godzilla fires a desperate atomic ray, knocking the hybrid backward. The hybrid's aim is disrupted, and its attack vaporizes several buildings instead.

As Godzilla rises to deliver the killing blow, Emmy issues a final command. Powered Gyaos lunges forward, using its feet as well as the Guiron and Viras heads to clamp onto Godzilla. With a roar, the fused monster lifts off, dragging Godzilla into the sky and out over the ocean.

Godzilla fires his atomic ray point-blank, obliterating the Zigra head and tearing through Powered Gyaos's torso. The two monsters plummet into the sea, vanishing beneath the waves.

Before returning to her own time, Emmy quietly bids farewell to Japan—and to Terasawa, whom she reveals to be one of her ancestors.

Deep beneath the ocean, tangled in the ruined remains of Powered Gyaos, Godzilla's eyes snap open. He roars into the darkness, alive and enraged.
