JohnnyChany Posted May 20 Read Aloud Posted May 20 THE CRYSTAL NEXUS TOURNAMENT Match #5 VS. CELES CHERE VS. GENERAL BEATRIX The vast throne room of Alexandria Castle gleamed beneath towering stained-glass windows and crystal chandeliers. Below them everyone stood witness to the duel between two of the greatest military women in any world. Celes Chere and General Beatrix collided in a furious exchange of sword strikes. Beatrix’s legendary sword, Save the Queen, moved with breathtaking precision, each slash forced Celes to block and retreat. “Excellent!” Patty declared “They’re both even better than advertised!” Celes countered with a thrust, but Beatrix twisted gracefully and drove her back. “You are skilled,” Beatrix said coolly, “but your swordsmanship lacks refinement.” Terra clenched her fists. “Come on, Celes!” Rosa added, “Stay focused!” Beatrix unleashed a flurry that knocked Celes backward. Seeing the advantage slipping away, Celes extended her free hand. “Firaga!” A roaring fireball hurtled toward Beatrix. Beatrix smirked. “Resorting to magic already? How desperate.” She swung Save the Queen in a glowing arc. “Thunder Slash!” Lightning erupted from her blade and collided with Celes’s spell in a violent explosion. The duel became a storm of sorcery. Ice and fire flashed across the throne room. Lightning crackled from Save the Queen. Celes answered with Blizzara. Then Beatrix raised her sword high. “Stock Break!” A wave of radiant force surged forward. Celes planted her feet. “Runic!” Blue energy spiraled into her blade and drained the entire attack from Beatrix. Beatrix’s eyes widened. “Impossible.” Celes immediately thrust out her hand. “Thundaga!” The bolt struck Beatrix squarely, forcing her backward. Aranea whistled. “Not bad.” Edea smiled faintly. “Some remarkable ability.” Beatrix’s pride flared. “Then let us see how much your sword can contain.” She pointed Save the Queen skyward. “Shock!” A colossal beam of blue-white energy tore across the hall. “Runic!” Celes absorbed most of the attack, but the sheer force blasted her across the marble floor. She skidded to one knee. She was now breathing heavily. Beatrix strode forward. “So, your Runic has limits.” Celes fired a desperate Flare attack, buying precious seconds. The non elemental spell exploded against Beatrix’s armor. Beatrix grimaced in pain. “You wound me, but you are still not my equal.” She lowered her stance. “I shall finish this. Absorb this if you can.” Save the Queen blazed with crimson energy. “Climhazzard!” Beatrix lunged like a meteor toward Celes. “Runic!” Celes raised her sword, but this time the energy overwhelmed her defenses. The impact engulfed her in a pillar of light. When it faded, Celes knelt back down to one knee, trembling, sword planted in the floor for support. Celes did not know if she even had the strength to stand. Beatrix turned away. “It is over.” She began walking back toward her team. “Victory is mine.” Celes’s eyes burned with anger. The dismissal stung more than any wound. “No…” She forced herself upright. “You don’t get to decide when I’m finished!” Her body erupted in blue energy. Terra gasped. “Celes!” Celes spun forward in a dazzling cyclone of sword strikes and unleashed her desperation limit break. “Spinning Edge!” The rapid assault carved brilliant arcs of light through the throne room. Beatrix turned too late. The final slash detonated in a burst of magical force. Beatrix staggered. Her sword slipped from her fingers. Then she collapsed to the marble floor. Silence. Then Arecia spoke. “The winner…” Arecia looked toward the exhausted general still standing through sheer willpower. “Celes Chere.” The Crystal Vanguard erupted in celebration. “We did it!” Faris shouted. Rydia clapped excitedly. Rosa smiled with relief. Terra rushed to Celes’s side as her friend swayed dangerously. “You were incredible.” Celes smiled weakly. “Thanks, I’m not sure my legs agree.” Nearby, Seven folded her arms and glanced at her Class-0 teammate, Sice. ”Should I assume you’re concerned that one of your team’s heavy hitters has fallen in the opening round?” Sice smirked. “Not in the slightest.” She looked toward Beatrix. “I remain quite confident in the team Mother entrusted to me.” Rosa stepped forward, bow in hand. “I can heal Celes.” Seven raised a hand. “That won’t be necessary. The healers are already in place.” “Please join us,” Seven called out. Two columns of light descended. From the first emerged Lenna Tycoon, the princess of Tycoon and one of the purest-hearted adventurers ever to journey across the worlds. Her shoulder-length pink hair framed a warm, open face. Lenna wore a bright orange tunic trimmed in gold and fastened with jewel-studded clasps, a broad blue sash tied at her waist with ornamental tassels that swayed as she moved, and a flowing pink cape drifted from her shoulders like soft wings. From the second column of rosy light stepped Porom, no longer the precocious little girl her companions remembered, but a poised young white mage who carried herself with quiet confidence and maturity. Her soft pink hair was gathered into a high ponytail. She wore a short rose-colored tunic cinched at the waist by a jeweled belt with a gemstone at its center. A pale gray cape draped over her shoulders and billowed behind her. “Lenna!” Faris exclaimed. The pirate captain rushed forward and embraced her sister tightly. Faris laughed shakily. “Blast it, Lenna. I was afraid I’d lose ye all over again.” Lenna hugged her back. “You’ll have to try much harder than that to get rid of me.” Rosa and Rydia approached Porom. “Porom!” Rydia cried. “We’re so happy to see you,” stated Rosa. “You’re here to heal Celes?” Porom shook her head. “Actually, no.” She glanced toward the Fractured Sovereigns. “I’ve been assigned to the other team.” “What?” Rosa and Rydia exclaimed together. Seven explained. “There were several excellent white mages available, but we selected Lenna for the Crystal Vanguard so Faris would have a familiar face at her side.” Faris gave Seven an exaggerated glare. “And ye kept that secret from me?” Seven allowed herself a small smile. “It seemed more effective as a surprise.” Lenna knelt beside Celes and placed her hands over the wounded general. Warm golden light enveloped Celes. “Curaga.” The bruises and burns vanished. Celes straightened and exhaled in amazement. “I feel completely restored.” Across the room, Porom cast healing magic over Beatrix. As the light flowed, Porom spoke with a cheerful tone. “Patty told me your team had the potential for a great deal of good, but not a lot of options for healers who would be willing to help you all out,” “Our reputations proceed us, I take it?’ asked Edea. “Oh yeah,” answered Porom. “But as for me, when I was a child, I healed and helped a man named Cecil after he destroyed my village.” She shrugged. “So, I suppose I’ve never been particularly selective about who I help if they are in need.” Scarlet folded her arms. “It is a strange feeling having a white mage on our side. I admit, I rather like it.” Aranea nodded. “Definitely makes it easier to go all out.” Beatrix rose, restored, and nodded respectfully to Porom. “You have my gratitude.” Seven clapped her hands. “Crystal Vanguard, time to move on.” As the team began to depart, Porom waved to Rosa and Rydia. “I sincerely wish you both the best of luck. I hope we cross paths again.” Lenna turned to Porom. “It was wonderful meeting you.” Then she looked at Faris. “I hope the next time I’m called; it will be after another victory.” Faris grinned. “Then ye’d best be ready, sister.” The teams began to separate, as the Crystal Nexus Tournament continued onward. CRYSTAL VANGUARD (1-0) The golden doors of Alexandria Castle swung shut behind the Crystal Vanguard. At their head walked Seven. The poised Class Zero cadet moved with the same controlled grace she displayed in battle. There was an understated confidence to her, the bearing of someone accustomed to discipline, strategy, and the burden of expectations. Behind her followed the five women of the Crystal Vanguard. Celes Chere, now fully restored by Lenna’s healing magic, walked beside Terra Branford. Celes still wore the proud posture of a general, though the recent battle lingered in her expression. Just behind them came Rydia and Rosa Farrell. Rydia’s green hair and elegant sorceress robes gave her an almost mystical presence, while Rosa’s flowing white garments and serene features projected warmth and grace. Faris Scherwiz brought up the rear, her pirate swagger undiminished, blonde hair bouncing as she walked with her usual easy confidence. As they progressed through the castle corridor, the world began to shift around them. The marble floors shimmered. The stained-glass windows dissolved into streams of crystalline light. The vaulted ceiling stretched into open sky. Stone walls rearranged themselves, their architecture became more familiar to Rosa and Rydia with every step. Soon the party found themselves standing upon a broad stone road beneath a bright blue sky. Before them rose the imposing towers and crimson banners of Baron Castle. Rosa, deep in thought, had not initially noticed it. Terra turned to Rydia, still pondering something Porom had said. “Rydia,” she began hesitantly, “what Porom said earlier, about healing someone named Cecil after he destroyed her village…” Rydia glanced at her and nodded. “It’s true.” “You’re serious?” Terra questioned. Rydia’s lips curved into a bittersweet smile. “I know. It sounds absurd when you say it aloud. Cecil, one of our closest companions and dearest friends, did horrible things as a Dark Knight. He even attacked my home, the village of Mist, under the orders of the King of Baron. He was the cause of my mother’s death and the burning of my village.” Terra’s eyes widened. “And you still traveled with him?” “More than that,” Rydia replied. “I trusted him with my life many times over.” She looked toward Baron Castle, her emerald eyes reflecting years of hard-won understanding. “Cecil was a good man trapped in a terrible situation. He was manipulated into serving a corrupt kingdom. When he realized what he had done, he sought redemption and became a Paladin.” “I understand that better than most,” Celes said softly. The former general’s voice carried a solemn empathy. “I spent years serving an empire that used me as a weapon. I believed I had no choice.” Rydia nodded. “Exactly.” Celes placed a hand over her heart. “It’s comforting to know I wasn’t alone in that.” Terra smiled warmly at both women. “There really are so many parallels between our journeys, aren’t there?” “There are,” Rydia agreed. “Perhaps that’s why we were brought together.” Terra looked forward toward Rosa. “I assume Rosa has similar stories about this Cecil,” “Not really,” answered Rydia. “Cecil and Rosa have been friends since childhood. She loves him with all her heart and never once doubted the good within him. She is completely devoted to him.” A short distance away, Rosa quickened her pace until she walked beside Seven. “Seven,” she said politely, “may I ask you something?” Seven glanced at her. “Of course.” Rosa looked back behind them where Porom and Lenna Tycoon had appeared before the world changed around them. “I know Porom is now an accomplished white mage and I can see that Lenna is too. Why was I chosen to compete while they were selected as support?” she asked. Seven considered the question carefully. “That,” she finally replied, “is something you should ask Patty. She had the greatest influence over team construction.” Rosa nodded. “I see.” “However, I do have a theory,” stated Seven. Rosa tilted her head. “Oh?” Seven looked Rosa up and down. “You are one of the most precise archers I have ever studied.” Rosa’s cheeks flushed faintly. “Well, I do pride myself on my aim.” “I’m certain,” Seven said, “that when you truly concentrate, it is impossible for you to miss.” Rosa blushed more deeply, but she did not argue. Seven continued. “The ability to strike with flawless accuracy from the back line while also healing your allies is extraordinarily valuable. There are many gifted white mages. Very few combine that role with such offensive precision.” Rosa lowered her eyes modestly. “I’ve always tried my best to support my friends.” “And that,” Seven replied, “may be exactly why you were chosen. The others are remarkable women, but they have had moments where their worlds recognized just how extraordinary they are.” Seven looked Rosa directly in the eye. “I am not certain you were ever given the same opportunity.” “What do you mean?” asked Rosa. Seven leaned in slightly. “I am sure Cecil meant well. But I believe he may have held you back from discovering the full extent of your potential.” For a moment Rosa could only stare. The words struck more deeply than she expected. “This tournament is not merely about identifying the strongest team,” explained Seven. “It is also an opportunity for each of you to grow, to be tested, and to discover strengths you may never have been forced to uncover.” Rosa clasped her hands before her. “I don’t know what to say.” Unable to deal with that suggestion directly, Rosa redirected the conversation back to the other healers. “Will I get to meet them all?” she asked. “I am certain all of the white mages will cross paths before this tournament is over,” Seven answered. Rydia’s voice rang out. “Rosa!” Rosa turned. Rydia stood a few paces ahead, pointing toward the horizon. “Look around.” Rosa did. The realization hit her all at once. The stone walls of Alexandria were gone completely. The air was fresher, tinged with the scent of grass and earth. Baron Castle stood proudly before them. Rosa’s blue eyes widened. “We’re outside Baron Castle.” She turned slowly toward Seven. “Why have you brought us here?” Seven smiled “Because the next battle is about to begin and it is yours.” Rosa caught her breath. “Mine?” Seven nodded. “That’s right.” The white mage and archer placed a hand over her heart; her eyes widened in astonishment. “Oh my.” The others gathered around her. Celes smiled encouragingly. “You’ll do wonderfully.” Terra nodded. "We know you will.” Rydia clasped Rosa’s hand. “Show them what Baron’s finest white mage can do.” Faris grinned broadly. “Aye, lass. Time to show everyone that deadeye aim Seven keeps goin’ on about.” Rosa drew a deep breath and looked up at the castle she once called home. LUMINARIES OF LEGEND (0-1) The battered streets of the Sector 7 slums still echoed with the energy of the tournament's first true contest. Tifa Lockhart had only moments earlier defeated Jade in a dazzling display of martial prowess. Now the two teams stood in the aftermath. Tifa and the Crossfire Hearts were already following Cater into the distance, their silhouettes faded toward the edge of the slum streets. Jade remained where she stood for a moment longer. The tall martial artist from Heliodor had regained her poise after Serena's restorative magic. Her emerald battle dress fluttered gently as she turned away from Tifa's departing figure. A thoughtful smile touched her lips. Then she pivoted toward Serena. The gentle priestess stood nearby with her hands folded demurely before her. Her long blonde hair was held back by a green headband, and her flowing green-and-white dress shimmered with a soft light. "Serena," Jade said warmly, stepping forward. "I cannot tell you how happy I am to see you." "And I am so very glad to see you too, Jade,” Serena responded. "Does this mean you are with us now? Permanently?" Jade asked. Serena's smile was tinged with regret. "I am afraid not in the way you're thinking." Jade blinked. "I will not be traveling beside you all the time," Serena explained gently. "But whenever any of you are injured and require healing, I will come to your aid." Jade's shoulders drooped. "So, I will only see you when we lose." Serena shook her head quickly. "Not necessarily! Even after a victory, if you are hurt enough, I will still appear." From nearby, Jessica Albert folded her arms beneath her crimson corset and smirked. "Which still means we'll mostly only see Serena when we get our butts kicked." she called out. "No offense to either of you, but I hope we don't see you very often then." Serena giggled lightly. "None taken. And I hope you do not become too reliant on me." "Heeeeey! Luminaries! Time to move on to the next challenge!" Cinque exclaimed. Cinque stood several yards away, waving both arms energetically. The cheerful Class Zero cadet was impossible to miss. Her auburn hair was braided into two thick pigtails, and her bright red scarf fluttered over her academy uniform. Even standing still, she radiated boundless enthusiasm. Jade and Serena exchanged one final embrace. "Until next time," Serena said. Jade nodded. "Hopefully after a victory." With a shimmer of white light, Serena vanished. The Luminaries of Legend began walking after Cinque. As they moved through the Sector 7 slums, the world around them began to subtly distort. The rusty girders and corrugated metal walls stretched and blurred. Mako lamps dimmed and transformed into torchlight. The cracked concrete changed into worn stone. The transition was so gradual that it felt like walking through a dream. At the rear of the group, Red watched the departing Crossfire Hearts with narrowed eyes. The red-haired thief adjusted the sash at her waist and grinned. "Bit of a shame I didn't relieve that Yuffie girl of some of her valuables." she stated. Jessica snorted. "You're impossible." Red shrugged. "I know a fellow thief when I see one. And trust me, she was carrying something worth stealing." Ahead of them, Aishe walked beside Bianca Whitaker. The spirited island warrior cast an admiring glance toward Bianca's polished bow. "That's a fine weapon,” she gushed. Bianca smiled. "Thank you. I used all sorts of weapons when I first set out on my adventure. Staves, whips..." She patted the bow affectionately. "But I've grown very fond of this one." Cinque suddenly fell into step beside them with her hands clasped behind her back. "Bianca, I have to tell you something." Bianca turned with an amused smile. "Yes?" Cinque practically bounced. "When I was studying your world, I absolutely fell in love with your story." "My story?" "The whole childhood-friends-to-lovers thing!" Cinque squealed. "Growing up together, adventuring together, falling in love, getting married, it's soooo romantic!" Bianca's cheeks flushed pink. "Well... thank you." Her eyes softened with unmistakable affection. "My husband means everything to me." Cinque tilted her head. "It's kind of tragic that in some timelines you don't end up with him." Bianca stopped walking. "What?" Cinque blinked innocently. "Oh! Um..." Bianca stared at her. "What do you mean by 'some timelines'?" Cinque continued walking as if she had not just shattered Bianca's understanding of reality. Then she looked back at her with surprising seriousness. "Can I ask you something?" Bianca was still thrown for a loop. “All right." Cinque's tone remained cheerful, but there was a serious undercurrent beneath it. "Do you ever wonder whether your complete devotion to the man you love has limited you?" Bianca opened her mouth. Closed it. For the first time since arriving in the Astral Crucible, she seemed genuinely unsettled. "I... no. I don't think so." Aishe scoffed. "I can't imagine letting anyone cramp my independence." "My relationship is nothing like that," Bianca insisted. Cinque nodded innocently. “Maybe not." Then, just as suddenly, her grin returned. "Oh! Look where we are!" The group came to a stop. Bianca looked up. The world had changed completely. The slums of Midgar were gone. In their place stood broad green fields beneath a clear blue sky. Stone walls rose in the distance, and banners flapped in the wind atop a mighty fortress. Baron Castle stood before them. Bianca turned sharply to Cinque. "Why would you ask me a question like that?" Cinque rested her hands on her hips. "I wanted to know your mindset before your match." Bianca's eyes widened. “My match?" She looked across the field. There, waiting near the castle gates, stood the five women of the Crystal Vanguard alongside their liaison, Seven. The elegant whip-wielder stood with one hand on her hip. Cinque raised a finger and pointed directly at Bianca. "You're up." Bianca gasped. At that exact moment, Cinque and Seven spotted one another. Seven's usually cool expression softened into a knowing smirk. "Came to deliver another team to the slaughter, Cinque?" she questioned. Cinque beamed. "You wish!" The two Class Zero cadets crossed the field toward one another like old comrades meeting between battles. Behind them, Bianca Whitaker stared at Baron Castle, then at the waiting Crystal Vanguard. Her grip tightened on her bow. The next battle of the Crystal Nexus Tournament was about to begin. ROSA VS. BIANCA The green fields outside Baron Castle lay bathed in golden afternoon light. On one side stood the five members of the Crystal Vanguard, Rosa Joanna Farrell, Rydia, Celes Chere, Terra Branford, and Faris Scherwiz, with Seven standing among them. Facing them were the Luminaries of Legend, Bianca Whitaker, Jade, Jessica Albert, Red, and Aishe, guided by the ever-cheerful Cinque. Bianca still wore a flustered expression from Cinque's unsettling question. Rosa, standing opposite her in her flowing white-and-rose-colored gown, looked equally thoughtful. Then the sky above them shimmered. Three columns of radiant light descended from the heavens. When the brilliance faded, the tournament's hosts stood before them. Gentiana appeared first, serene and statuesque in her black and white kimono-like gown, her pale face composed and unreadable. At the center stood Arecia Al-Rashia, her severe features softened only by the confidence in her eyes. To her right materialized Patty, blue hair shining and jewelry sparkling as she landed with theatrical flair. Patty spread her arms wide. "Ooooh, this should be a good one!" Arecia stepped forward, hands folded behind her back. "Welcome, competitors, to the fifth official match of the Crystal Nexus Tournament." Her voice carried across the field with effortless authority. "Today we examine one of the noblest and most powerful forces in all worlds." Her eyes moved from Rosa to Bianca. "Devotion." Rosa straightened instinctively. Bianca met Arecia's gaze without hesitation. Arecia continued. "A lifetime of devotion to another can inspire extraordinary acts of courage. It can grant the strength to face impossible odds. It can transform ordinary people into legends." She paused. "But what becomes of that power when the focus of that devotion is absent?" The question lingered in the air. "Does the will falter? Or does it grow stronger when redirected toward something greater than a single individual?" She clasped her hands behind her back once more. "That is among the answers I hope to uncover by pitting these two remarkable women against one another." Gentiana glided forward like a spirit walking through moonlight. "In one world," she said softly, "a woman wrapped her beloved in healing light, shielding him from the darkness that threatened to consume him. In another, a woman stood beside the one she loved and answered danger with flames fierce enough to reduce armies to ash." Her attention shifted to from Rosa to Bianca and back again. "One protects by mending wounds. The other protects by ensuring few enemies remain standing." The wind stirred around Gentiana. "Yet in this contest, there are no companions to shelter. "No husbands. No heroes. No children. Only the two women and the strength that their love has forged." She now stood between Rosa and Bianca briefly before turning back to resume her position aside Arecia. "Which path shall prove stronger when turned inward?" Patty bounced eagerly onto the grass. "That's exactly why I'm so excited!" She pointed enthusiastically toward Bianca. "Can Rosa keep herself standing long enough to survive Bianca's Kasizzle and Kafrizzle? Because trust me, those fire spells are no joke!" Then she swung toward Rosa. "Or can Bianca handle getting blasted by Rosa's Holy magic if Rosa’s curative magic is enough to help her weather the opening storm?" Patty clasped her hands beneath her chin, positively vibrating with excitement. "And let's not forget, these two are both amazing archers! Holy magic, fire magic, healing spells, and arrows flying everywhere! I honestly don't know which part I'm most looking forward to." After a brief pause, she answered her own question. "Probably all of it." Arecia allowed herself the faintest smile. "I agree." Rosa and Bianca stepped forward. The two blonde women approached until only a few paces separated them. For a moment, they simply studied one another. Bianca's blue eyes were warm but determined. Rosa's expression was gentle, yet resolute. Bianca spoke first. "I can't help feeling as though we're being judged for the people we love." Rosa gave a small, understanding nod. "I was thinking the same thing." "No matter what anyone says, I have no regrets about the choices I've made," Bianca said defiantly. Rosa smiled. "Neither do I." She looked around at the situation they now found themselves in. "Let’s hope that neither of us will have regrets about the choices we make in the next several minutes." Bianca's anxious expression faded, replaced by the confident smile of a seasoned adventurer. "If we both give this everything we've got," she said, "I don't see how that's possible." Rosa raised her elegant bow. "Then let us honor the people we love by showing them our very best." Quote

But it happens, especially with characters that aren't necessarily super well known. I have been trying to put a lot into these as a Final Fantasy is one of my favorite IPs, so I appreciate the kind words. 1 Quote
