-------

The night sky above the old mission church churned like a storm trapped behind stained glass. Clouds twisted unnaturally, as if something above them was trying to force its way into the world. Manji didn’t care for omens, but even he could tell this wasn’t the kind of trouble you walked away from.

He kicked open the warped wooden doors, stepping into the nave with his usual mix of irritation and readiness. His weapons clinked softly against each other—steel, iron, and enough blades to outfit a small militia. The air inside was cold, colder than the night outside, and carried a strange metallic scent that reminded him of blood and lightning.

A figure stood at the altar.

Tall. Pale. Perfectly still.

Gabriel.

His wings were not visible, but the weight of them—of what he was—pressed against the room like a physical force. The candles around him flickered despite the absence of wind. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes held the kind of ancient disdain that made even seasoned warriors feel like insects.

Manji spat to the side. “You’re the one causing all this mess? I’ve fought monsters, demons, and a whole lot of idiots, but you’re something else.”

Gabriel turned his head slightly, as though acknowledging a sound far beneath his notice. “You carry a curse that defies the natural order. A soul that refuses to die. Such things are… offensive.”

“Yeah? Well, you’re not exactly normal yourself.”

Gabriel stepped forward, and the floorboards groaned under a pressure that wasn’t weight but presence. “Your immortality is an abomination. I will correct it.”

Manji’s hand drifted toward the hilt of one of his many blades. “People have been trying to ‘correct’ me for years. Didn’t work out for them.”

The church trembled as Gabriel’s power surged, warping the air, bending the shadows. Manji felt the familiar sting of the sacred worms in his blood reacting—warning him, preparing him.

Two beings who could not die easily.

One cursed to live.

One too proud to fall.

The space between them tightened like a drawn bowstring.

Then, without another word, the clash began.
