JohnnyChany Posted March 28 Read Aloud Posted March 28 The Torrance Branch of the Superhero Dispatch Network buzzed with its usual chaotic rhythm of phones ringing and alerts flashing. At the center of it all stood the branch manager, Blonde Blazer, her cape draped elegantly behind her., with one hand on her hip as she surveyed her domain. “Another clean shift,” she said with a smile. Across from her, dispatcher Robert Robertson leaned back in his chair with his headset hanging loosely around his neck. “Clean? We rerouted a runaway blimp, stopped 3 different jewel heists, and convinced a sentient AI not to declare war. It was an excellent shift." Blazer stepped closer, lowering her voice. “And always you handled the dispatching perfectly.” Before Robert could respond, she leaned in and kissed him. “OH, COME ON!” Everyone turned in the office. Punch-Up, barely three feet tall but built like a brick wall shook his head. “Nobody wants to see that! This is a workplace, not a rom-com! Get a room. Or at least a broom closet, lad!” “I usually don’t take advice from people not tall enough to ride the adult roller coasters.” Robert shot back. “Screw you!” Most of the office laughed. Blazer squeezed Robert’s arm as they walked past everyone. Across the room, a small fire flickered in the palm of the ponytailed master of the flame, Flambae. He watched them walk away with an expression of disgust.. “Unbelievable…” he muttered. Behind him, the six foot six inch tall demoness, Malevola tilted her head. “You’ve been staring at them for like ten seconds, dude. That’s either jealousy or a cry for help.” “Probably both,” added pop star and reformed villain, Prism. Flambae scoffed. “It’s not jealousy.” “You sure?” asked Malevola. Flambae’s flames flared slightly. “I just… don’t like him. Still.” Malevola smirked “He’s a loser,” Flambae snapped. “And yet he still somehow ends up with that.” Prism crossed her arms. “So, your issue is… his happiness?” “My issue,” Flambae growled, “is that every time something good happens to him, it makes me want to burn something down.” Malevola nodded thoughtfully. “Ah. Classic villain relapse impulse.” “I like being a hero now,” Flambae insisted. “The crowds, the cheers, the brand deals…” Prism chuckled. “..the ego,”. “...the recognition,” Flambae corrected. “But there’s something about that guy that makes me want to go full supervillain again.” Prism leaned over. “Have you considered therapy?” Flambae stared at her. “What.” “SDN offers it now,” Prism said casually. “Big push for mental health awareness after Phenomaman’s whole meltdown when Blazer broke up with him" Malevola rolled her eyes. “I feel like I still hear him crying on the rooftop a few times a week.” Prism turned back to Flambae. “Anyway, the company has its own contracted therapist now that anyone can go see. Dr. Karla Sofen.” Flambae frowned. “You two ever go?” Malevola snorted. “Absolutely not. Last time I trusted someone to analyze my mind, they tried to exorcise me.” Prism raised a hand. “My only issue is with those who still don’t recognize my genius.” Flambae gave them both a dubious stare. Prism smiled. “But you? You should go.” Flambae looked back toward the hallway where Robert had disappeared. “…maybe,” he muttered. Three months later the Torrance branch received a surprise visit from corporate HR. The office fell silent when the elevator doors opened and a woman stepped out with animmaculate suit, composed expression, and a faint, almost imperceptible glow around her. “She’s here,” someone whispered. Blonde Blazer was summoned into her own office within minutes. Inside the glass-walled office, the woman smiled politely. “Thank you for meeting with me. I’m Serena Vale, Senior HR Representative, and emotional regulation specialist for SDN.” Blazer sat slowly. “What can I do for you?” Serena folded her hands. “First, let me say, your service has been exemplary. As a hero, a manager, and a public figure for the company. You’ve been invaluable to SDN.” Blazer smiled. “Thank you.” There was a brief pause. “Unfortunately,” Serena continued, “we’re going to have to let you go.” The words didn’t register at first. “…I’m sorry?” Blazer said. Serena’s aura pulsed gently, and suddenly, Blazer felt… calm. Too calm. Serena wasn’t just a suit, but a hero in her own right with the ability to control emotion. “We’ve become aware of your romantic relationship with dispatcher Robert Robertson.” Serena stated. Blazer stiffened. “That’s—” “A conflict of interest,” Serena said. “And a significant one.” “We’re professionals. There is no need to be concerned that our relationship will affect the workplace,” Blazer insisted. “Perhaps,” Serena said. “But history suggests otherwise.” Blazer lifted an eyebrow. “Phenomaman, your erstwhile paramour and previous relationship” Serena continued. “I hope you haven’t already forgotten about him. His subsequent emotional collapse after your breakup nearly cost this company millions. He was our poster boy.” “That was different…” “And now,” Serena stated smoothly, “we have Robert. A rising star after his defeat of Shrod. A valuable asset to the company.” Blazer’s fists clenched. “You think I’d hurt him?” “We think there could be a pattern.” Blazer’s anger surged, but it quickly subsided due to Serena’s abilities.. “How did you come to this conclusion?” Blazer asked in an unnaturally steady tone. Serena hesitated. “A recommendation,” she admitted. “From Dr. Karla Sofen.” Blazer froze. “She has spoken with members of Robert’s Z-Team,” Serena explained. “She is… concerned about the power dynamic and your possible abuse of it.” Blazer’s calm cracked slightly. “Who would replace me?” Serena smiled. “Dr. Sofen.” “What? A psychiatrist in charge of a branch of SDN? How?” “It would only be until we find a more long term solution,” Serena answered. “Besides, she is so much more than just a psychiatrist now. She recently convinced the supervillain, Moonstone, to relinquish the magic stone that gave him all his power to her. Now that power can be used for so much good.” Blazer quickly tried to process that chain of events. “Honestly, I think her resourcefulness will be a great benefit to this office,” said Serena. “And with her now empowered into one of the strongest heroes in the company, the branch will lose none of its firepower in your absence.” Blazer’s nails dug into her palms. She breathed in slowly. “I see.” She stood up. “Thank you for the opportunity.” She walked out of the office and left the building. Malevola, Prism, and Sonar stood near the break room. “Did Blazer just get fired?” Prism whispered. The human bat hybrid, Sonar, adjusted his suit tie. “That is… deeply concerning.” Malevola shrugged. “If she was fired over her relationship with Robert, you two owe me money.” Prism groaned and pulled out cash. “I really thought if HR was going to fire anyone over this it would have been Robert," “Who snitched?” Sonar wondered. Blonde Blazer did not talk to the team immediately after her unceremonious firing. She wanted to retreat for a little bit and gather her thoughts far away from the emotional manipulation of Serena. She went to the superhero bar, Crypto Night, for an early cocktail. She wondered what the best way to talk about this with Robert would be. She didn’t want him to feel responsible in any way. Who knew what story HR was telling the office. She stared into her drink. She wondered about taking off the amulet that gave her all her powers. At least then she would feel the effect of the alcohol she guzzled down. “How do you tell someone,” she said to herself, “that your relationship got you fired… without making them feel like it’s their fault?” “Am I interrupting?” She looked up. “Doc Samson?” The green-haired super strong psychiatrist smiled. “Been a while.” She stood and hugged him. “You missed the last three hero conventions.” “Not really my scene,” he said. “My one true love remains psychiatry.” “What brings you out here?” “I was looking for you,” Samson replied. “I heard that SDN was working with Dr. Karla Sofen and that is a problem.” “You know her?” asked Blazer. Samson nodded. “She’s dangerous. Manipulative. Power-hungry. She enjoys causing chaos and sewing division. I fear putting her in this kind of environment is like giving a child a free pass to an amusement park.” Blazer’s stomach dropped. “She doesn’t help people,” Samson concluded. “She uses them.” Blazer’s eyes widened with realization. As the day turned to night, Robert stood alone in the park, phone to his ear. “…come on, Mandy… pick up…” “Looking for someone?” He spun on his heel. Karla Sofen, now in her Moonstone persona, hovered slightly above the ground. “Dr. Sofen.” “Please,” she smiled. “Call me Karla.” “Listen, I know you are the new boss,” stated Robert. “I’m still just trying to process everything and I want to talk to Blazer.” “I understand, and I promise I don’t bite,” Moonstone responded. “I just wanted to get to know my star dispatcher,” Robert smiled uncomfortably. “I know you have a thing for strong, powerful blondes, but I promise to keep everything professional as Blazer should have,” Moonstone commented. Robert shook his head. “I can’t do this right now, Can we talk tomorrow?” “Of course,” she answered softly. Robert nodded and left. Soon after, a gust of wind announced the arrival of Blonde Blazer. “Stay away from him,” she warned. Moonstone smiled. “Ah. The former branch manager.” “Drop the act,” Blazer snapped. “Whatever you’re doing, it’s not going to work so stop.” “What do you think I’m doing?” “You manipulated HR,” Blazer accused “I made a recommendation,” Moonstone countered. “Based on valid concerns.” Moonstone regarded Blonde Blazer with faux sympathy. “You’re upset with me. Understandable. But your anger toward me is misguided when the only one responsible for your actions is you..” Blazer stepped closer. “You won’t gaslight me.” Moonstone chuckled. “Is that what you think is happening? You know, we’re very similar, you and I.” Blazer’s eyes narrowed. “Normal women, with no powers” Moonstone glanced down at the red amulet on the chest of Blonde Blazer’s costume. “who persevered and found power through magical stones. Who lead teams. Who shape people.” “I don’t use them,” said Blazer Moonstone smiled. “Don’t you? And unlike you I don’t plan on treating my position like a dating pool.” Blazer’s eyes aura flared bright yellow. “Careful,” stated Moonstone. “You attack me, and SDN will never take you back.” Blazer clenched her fists. “I don’t care. We worked too hard to build that team, that family, and I won’t let you tear it apart.” “Then,..” Moonstone hesitated to power up. "...this is really going to be the worst day of your life when you lose your job and get beaten down.” 1 Quote
