Challenge #1

The neon lights of Southtown shimmered against the night sky, painting the streets in electric blues and violent pinks. Inside the legendary Pao Pao Cafe, the atmosphere buzzed louder than a packed arcade on a Saturday night in 1992.

A raised stage had been constructed near the center of the café, flanked by banners that depicted pixelated fists, flying kicks, and the words:

“THE STREETS ARE FOREVER INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT – HONORING THE BEST TO BEAT ’EM UP.”

Front and center stood Terry Bogard. He wore a charcoal-gray suit jacket stretched across his broad shoulders, but the sleeves had been ripped clean off, exposing his muscular arms. His trademark red hat remained firmly on his blond head casting a shadow over his confident grin. To his left stood Blue Mary. She wore a sleek sapphire-blue evening dress, cut high along one leg to allow for movement. Her blonde hair was swept back in a smooth, practical style. It was elegant, but ready for action at a moment’s notice. To Terry’s right stood Mai Shiranui. Mai’s dress was a hot red number, inspired by her kunoichi outfit. The high slits and flowing silk sleeves evoked flames dancing in the wind. She held a decorative folding fan at her side.

Mai gave Terry a slow once-over.

She sighed dramatically as she tapped her fan against her chin. “Honestly, you almost looked respectable… until I noticed the missing sleeves.”

Terry shrugged and flashed a grin. “Hey, I made an effort.”

Mary chuckled. “He did, Mai. For Terry, this is formal wear.”

Terry tipped his hat toward Mary. “You clean up pretty great yourself, partner.”

Mary’s lips curved subtly. “Careful, Bogard.”

Mai’s eyes lit up mischievously. “Ooooh? Is this subtle flirting I detect?”

Both Terry and Mary spoke at once.

“It’s not like that.”

“Don’t start.”

They exchanged a brief glance but neither denied it outright.

Terry adjusted his hat and addressed the audience.

“Tonight isn’t about us. It’s about the warriors who cleaned up their cities the only way they knew how—with fists, boots, and grit. Guys and gals who walked into crime-ridden streets and said, ‘Enough.’”

He clenched his fist tight..

“There’s something almost  spiritual about it. Fighting in the streets. Protecting your home. I feel connected to every competitor here tonight.”

Mai nodded thoughtfully. “They all do seem so similar. Southtown. Metro City. Wood Oak City. New York. Different names, same problems. Crime bosses. Corruption. Syndicates.”

Mary folded her arms. “I’ve worked as an agent-for-hire long enough to confirm, unfortunately Mai is right. Lawlessness pops up  everywhere. You just don’t always see it.”

Mai frowned, “What a depressing thought.”

Terry spoke up. “Which is exactly why we shine a spotlight on the people who fight back.”

Mary stepped forward to explain the game.

“Six teams. Five members each. Every fighter faces one member from the other five teams. Stage clears or direct combat. One point per victory.”

Mai twirled her fan. “From what I hear these types of tournaments are all the rage. With a prize of glory, legacy, and bragging rights for their team.”

Terry lifted his arm dramatically.  “Let's meet them.”

Images of five of the six teams flashed across the screen with details on each team, its leader, its members, and their connection to one another.

Team Haggar – Metro City

Mike Haggar – Team leader. Former mayor and professional wrestler, towering mountain of muscle with an unmistakable mustache that led the charge to take down the Mad Gear gang.

Floyd Iraia – A hulking former construction worker who became Zan’s assistant when Zan replaced his missing arms with metal ones. Agreed to help Blaze take down the new Syndicate under the leadership of Mr. and Ms. Y

Max Thunder – Professional wrestler and friend to Axel Stone. Helped Axel and Blaze defeat the Syndicat the second time around as well as rescue their friend, Adam Hunter.

Team Hunter – Wood Oak City

Adam Hunter – Team Leader. Worked with Blaze and Axel to take down the first incarnation of Mr. X’s Syndicate. Was the only one of the original 3 to return to the Police Force. Was kidnapped  by and rescued from Mr. X. Was promoted to Special Forces and is seen as a true hero in the city.

Eddie “Skate” Hunter – Agile and quick younger brother of Adam. Started fighting Mr. X’s Syndicate as a young teen to rescue his kidnapped older brother. Always seen wearing rollerblades and a backwards baseball cap.

Cherry Hunter – Guitar-slinging daughter of Adam. Musician and fighter. Elected to join Blaze in her father’s stead to take down the new Syndicate run by the Y siblings.

Estel Aguirre – Wood Oak City Special Forces Officer. Deeply respects Adam. Unwittingly was manipulated by Mr. and Mrs. Y to arrest Axel and Blaze and fought them twice.

Roo – Boxing Kangaroo. Former pet and weapon of a Syndicate thug. Set free by Blaze’s team. Formed a friendship with Skate.

Team Dragon – New York City

Billy Lee - Team Leader. Along with his older brother, successor to the martial art known as Setsukon. Have defeated the Black Shadow Warriors several times under various leaders over the world.

Jimmy Lee - Along with his younger brother, successor to the martial art known as Setsukon. Has defeated the Black Shadow Warriors several times under various leaders all over the world.

Lynn Baker - Master of Ryuzuiken. Trained with both brothers when they were Billy and Jimmy Lewis. Teamed with Billy in the fighting tournament in Sunshine City. The White Dragon.

Mai clapped her hands together as the camera switched back to her.

“I know what you’re thinking, there's one more team… well the sixth team is a mystery team,” she teased. “That will be revealed right before their first match.”

Mary smiled. “You’ll get to know all these teams better in due time. But we want to get off to a fast start. A strong start.”

“We needed to open with two brawling icons,” Terry added. He raised his fist. “Two legends of street justice.”

“From Team Blaze, the man synonymous with rage filled streets, Axel Stone. And from Team Dragon, the elder Lee brother, and half of the Double Dragons, Jimmy”.

“Every rookie looking to make a difference in their crime riddled neighborhoods could learn from these two,” Mary noted.

Mai smiled. “Neither is my type,  but both have an undeniable rugged charm.”

Terry chuckled. “I figure the challenge for these two needs to be absolutely epic. Especially if we really want to start this thing with a bang. The challenge has to be epic. So I picked it myself.”

Mary raised an eyebrow. “You certainly chose a familiar environment.”

“But an iconic one in its own right,” stated Mai.

“They’ll ascend Geese Tower right here in Southown!” Terry declared. ,” They will have to  clear the entire building of every thug and Geese Howard loyalist inside…”

“And defeat the area boss waiting at the top,” Mai added. “Geese’s former right hand man and bandana enthusiast, Billy Kane.”

“The first to clear the tower wins the point for their team,” Mary explained.

Terry shook his head. “I know first hand how hard it will be and even if they make it to the top, if they are not ready for a real fight, Billy will crack their skulls with his three sectioned staff.”

“We now send it over to one of our  correspondents, Joe Higashi, who is with both Axel and Jimmy at the base of Geese Tower.,”  said Mai.

The camera cut to the street outside Gesses Tower. Neon lights reflected .off the glas windows of the massive skyscraper.

Joe Higashi, longtime friend of Terry Bogard and proud Muay Thai champion, stood wearing crisp black slacks, but no shirt.

Mai’s voice crackled through his ear piece. “Joe! Where is your button-up?!”

Joe flexed unconsciously. “Too excited! Can’t be buttoned up tonight!”

Beside him stood Axel and Jimmy,  both appeared ready and neither seemed phased by the challenge in front of them.

“Gentlemen. Your challenge, climb the tower, clear every thug, beat Billy Kane. First one done wins,” Joe explained  And hey…”

He winked.

“Remember you don’t have to throw him out a window like Terry did his boss.”

Axel smirked. From what I heard, that’s more something Cody, Guy, or Haggar would do. Didn’t they toss that Belger guy out one?”

Joe’s eyes widened. “That is gnarly.”

Jimmy rolled his shoulders. “Usually I do this with my brother. Feels a bit strange solo.”

Axel nodded. “I’m used to Blaze watching my back.”

The two men exchanged respectful looks.

Joe grinned. “So… is it gonna be like embarrassing if you both fail?”

Jimmy scoffed. “I don’t see that happening.”

Small flames flickered in Axel’s closed  fists. “Not only will we clear it. I’ll do it first.”

.”Then let’s rage in these streets… or um building,” said Joe.

Both Axel and Jimmy were led to opposite entrances of the tower. They prepared themselves for non stop fighting and walked through the doors.

You and your tournaments...

Must be nice to actually execute these ideas instead of just fantasizing about them like some people (starts with an 'L')

Thank you so much for your contributions.

I think Jimmy will win this but I'm voting for Axel.

Good to see you keeping the gaming tourneys going, Johnny. You're also getting good at giving whatever A.I. you're using good prompts for match images. :D

Anyways, good set-up and start to this tourney. It actually might be entertaining to see how Kimberly would fit in a Final Fight setting with her spray paint attacks, as well to see how she might clash with the less flashy Maki.

As for the match, it's making me once again wish I had played the Streets of Rage games growing up. 😅 In this match-up, though, it feels like Axel's physicals and fire attacks might give him the edge here.
