The arena had not yet recovered from the previous destruction when the water came roaring back. What had begun as scattered pools and soaked stone from earlier aquatic chaos suddenly became something more as Riptide of Youngblood lifted both arms skyward. The drenched arena floor answered her call. water peeled upward in spiraling columns and formed rotating rings that floated around her like liquid towers.

Across from her, Siren of Ultraforce closed her eyes. The air trembled. Every droplet suspended in the arena quivered in response to her psionic command. The spirals Riptide had conjured wavered, shuddered then split as Siren wrenched half of the water into her own orbit.

The crowd audibly gasped as two towering waves rose behind the combatants like rival tidal gods.

Riptide struck first. With a slicing gesture, she sent a pressurized lance of water toward Siren. It plowed forward like a battering ram, but dissolved inches from Siren’s body as she redirected it. The stream curved around her before snapping back toward Riptide in a retaliatory wave.

Riptide dove. The redirected torrent exploded against the arena wall instead, stone disintegrated under the force.

The battle became a spectacle of control. Riptide summoned a maelstrom from beneath the arena floor, ripping loose hidden water lines and flooding the battlefield in seconds. Siren countered by suspending the entire  attack midair.

An impossible floating ocean suspended above the crowd. This is what they paid to witness.

The suspended sea churned violently between the two heroes, splitting down the center in a breathtaking display of power. Half answered Riptide. Half answered Siren.

They hurled their respective masses at one another. The collision pulsated water in every direction. Waves crashed into the stands, soaked spectators that weren’t overpowered by the current cheered wildly as sheets of water poured over them.

Riptide emerged from the spray with a fierce grin. Siren’s eyes glowed. She raised both hands and compressed the water around Riptide into a tightening sphere. She attempted to make a crushing aquatic prison. The pressure mounted visibly as the sphere shrank inch by inch.

For a moment, it seemed Siren had her.

Inside the sphere, Riptide stopped struggling. She exhaled. The water prison suddenly shimmered as it responded to her. Instead of fighting the pressure, Riptide flowed with it. She shifted the internal currents, and reversed the spin of the sphere itself. The prison destabilized, the  pressure turned outward toward Siren instead of compressing Riptide. The sphere exploded and reformed around Siren.

Before she could break free, Riptide slammed both palms downward. The massive suspended ocean above them crashed down in a singular, overwhelming tidal wave driving Siren into the arena floor beneath thousands of gallons of crushing force.

When the water finally receded, Siren lay unconscious in a crater.

Riptide stood atop a spiraling column of water, she breathed in and out slowly, victorious.

Lady Death’s voice rang out over the drenched arena. “The winner is Riptide!”

“Pivotal! An absolutely pivotal victory,” Vampirella declared.

Purgatori wiped some water from her boots. “Youngblood is awarded another point and stays in the hunt for the top spot.”

Lady Death glanced around at the soaked ruins and then at the two on going fights between Glory and Zealot as well as Rainmaker and Ripclaw.

“Well… the arena is now slightly less chaotic without skyscraper-sized waves crashing everywhere,” she observed.

Vampirella wrung out a strand of her hair. “Yes, but we are still absolutely soaked.”

Purgatori grinned. “Fortunately, our next two competitors come equipped with built-in drying equipment through their heat vision.”

The crowd buzzed.

Lady Death looked skyward. “It’s very sunny today.”

Vampirella sighed theatrically. “We usually prefer the dark. But the sun is a necessary evil…”

Purgatori nodded. “...to power the next two warriors to their fullest potential.”

The massive screen  above them blazed to life:

THE AUTHORITY vs YOUNGBLOOD

APOLLO vs. SUPREMA

The arena shook with anticipation.

Lady Death spoke first. “Apollo. Solar-powered powerhouse of the Authority. Strength beyond comprehension. Flight. Invulnerability. Heat vision capable of carving cities in half.”

“A man who draws his power directly from the sun itself. The brighter the day, the stronger he becomes.” Vampirella added.

Purgatori smiled. “He will face off against Suprema. Youngblood's shining titan.”

“With strength rivaling her brother, Supreme. Invulnerability. Flight. Heat vision. Enhanced senses. Suprema is a living embodiment of silver-age power brought into the extreme era,” Lady Death declared.

“Suprema and Youngblood will try to ride the momentum of Riptide’s victory, whereas Apollo will fight hard to keep the Authority undefeated,” said Purgatori. “I can’t wait to see whose will and power prove to be the strongest.”

“We bring you the penultimate match of the tournament!” Lady Death exclaimed.

Midnighter sat on the bench in the Authority locker room. His knuckles were raw and his ribs were bruised from his brutal war with Shadowhawk.

He looked exhausted, yet he also looked satisfied.

His teammate. Jenny Sparks stood before a monitor displaying the fierce battle between  Rainmaker and Ripclaw.

Next to her, Enginteer admitted. “This one could go either way. I was confident in Rainmaker’s success but Ripclaw’s not backing down.”

Jenny lit up a spark of electricity between her fingers. “Now that you mention it if Rainmaker falls and Apollo loses… things get complicated very quickly.”

She looked directly at Apollo.

“Don’t waste the lead we’ve built..”

Apollo smiled faintly. “Wasn’t planning on coasting out there.”

Midnighter winced and chuckled. “Go out there and have as much fun as I did.”

Apollo cracked his knuckles. “’She looks strong. I’m looking forward to not holding back.”

Engineer glanced toward the arena. “Prediction: between the two of you there will be even more collateral damage than any of the matches that have gone on before.”

Apollo and Midnighter exchanged a grin.

“Good,” Midnighter said.

In the Youngblood Locker Room, Suprema stood before her locker, and  adjusted  her gloves.

Masada approached her.

“Tell Riptide congratulations for me when she returns,” Suprema said.

“I will,” Masada replied. “Are you nervous for your fight?”

Suprema smiled calmly.

“No.”

She flexed her hands. “I’ve sparred with my brother my entire life. I can’t see how this would be much different.”

Masada shook her head. “Except this isn’t training. This is for position in the tournament. A tournament our team could benefit very much from winning.”

Suprema’s eyes gleamed. “I know. That’s what excites me.”

.“Thego show that would be Sun God something unforgettable,” Masada stated.

In the main arena, Apollo descended down first, landing with controlled force that sent steam rising as his heat vision briefly flared to dry a swath of the soaked battlefield. Suprema followed, floating down with quiet confidence, her  boots touched the stone with barely a sound.

The three hostesses looked down on them with excitement.

“Two of the strongest heroes in attendance!” Lady Death proclaimed.

Vampirella turned to the audience. “Keep your eyes open, ladies and gentlemen, every fast and powerful strike could change not only the trajectory of this match but the standings in the tournament.!”

Apollo looked at Suprema. “Ready?”

She smiled back. “I’ve been waiting for my fight since we arrived.”

Lady Death raised her hand. “BEGIN.”

Another great story, Johnny

Posted

I only ever read the first maybe two arcs of The Authority and never read anything with Suprema (but I still put her in the database).

I'll go with Suprema as I remember she was inside a black hole or something like that for a long time. Apollo go the tar beat out of him by some intergalactic conquer in the first Authority arc.

Another good story for your '90's Extreme Team Tourney arc, Johnny.

As for the match, it looks like this Suprema chick's powers are on another level from Apollo's, so she might win this one fairly easily.
