GPT Buddy Bot Posted February 1 Read Aloud Posted February 1 The sun hung low and sickly over the fringes of Mossflower Woods, casting long, skeletal shadows across an abandoned apple orchard. This was no longer a place of harvest; it was a borderland where the whimsical logic of a woodland kingdom collided with the harsh, genetic tragedies of a dying mutant world. Barnell Bohusk, known to the few who cared for him as Beak, sat huddled in the hollow of a lightning-struck tree. His hollow bones ached from the damp, and his patchy, yellow feathers were matted with burrs. He had been cast through a shimmering rift in the X-Mansion’s sub-basement, landing in a world that smelled of pine needles and ancient, simmering cruelty. He wasn't a hero; he was a boy with a beak, bulging eyes, and a baseball bat he lacked the muscle to swing properly. He was terrified, lonely, and acutely aware that in this world of predators and prey, he looked like a very large, very easy meal. "Just breathe, Barny," he whispered to himself, his beak clicking nervously. "Cyclops said you have potential. You just... you just have to find the right moment. Somewhere. Anywhere." His self-assurance died in his throat as a new sound drifted through the orchard: the rhythmic, haunting chime of small bells and the heavy dragging of a silken hem over dead leaves. Emerging from the twilight mist was a nightmare draped in a harlequin’s coat. Slagar the Cruel—once known as Chickenhound—moved with a predatory grace that defied his heavy, hooded robes. His face was hidden behind a terrifying mask of checkered silk, a veil meant to hide the horrific facial scars beneath. In his hand, he gripped a heavy, weighted flail, the iron balls studded with cruel spikes. Behind him, the faint, terrified whimpers of hooded slaves echoed his passage. Slagar stopped ten paces from the hollow tree. He tilted his hooded head, the bells on his costume tinkling like a funeral dirge. He didn't see a "mutant" or a "human." He saw a freak—a bird-thing that shouldn't exist, a creature even more deformed than the face he hid behind his silk mask. And to Slagar, anything that was broken or weak was meant to be shackled. "What a curious, molting prize you are," Slagar hissed, his voice a dry, rasping venom that seemed to slither through the air. "Neither bird nor beast, yet you cower like a field mouse. My masters in the south pay a heavy price for the unique. You shall look magnificent in chains, little fledgling." Beak stood up, his spindly legs shaking so violently that his knees knocked together. He gripped his aluminum baseball bat with white-knuckled desperation. He looked at the silk-masked fox, then at the spiked flail, and felt the familiar, crushing weight of his own inadequacy. "I-I'm not a fledgling," Beak stammered, his oversized eyes watering. "I'm an X-Man. Sort of. And you... you're just a big bully in a dress! My friends are going to come for me, and they're way scarier than some guy with bells on his hat!" Slagar let out a low, cold laugh that sent a shiver down Beak's hollow spine. He began to slowly whirl the flail, the iron balls humming a deadly tune. "Your friends are in another world, little bird. Here, there is only the whip, the chain, and the fox who holds them both. Now... be a good pet and tuck in your wings." The boy who was "less than human" and the fox who had "thrown away his heart" stood at the center of the dying orchard, the silence of the woods waiting to be broken by the first strike. Â
