Inside the puzzle labyrinth, walls shifted with a low, grinding hum, corridors folded in on themselves, and glowing runes flickered from blue to red and back again. Overhead, holographic constellations rotated slowly, each one representing a possible route or a possible mistake.

The nanotech powered Engineer of the Authority hovered forward, silver liquid metal flowed across her body. Panels unfolded from her arms, reshaped into scanners, probes, and hard-light constructs that mapped the maze in real time.

Across the chamber, the WildC.A.T.S’ Void floated serenely. Her face was calm, eyes focused as she extended her senses into the void between dimensions. She felt absence instead of a presence.

“There,” she said quietly.

She stepped through a shadow that folded inward and reappeared several corridors ahead, only to find a dead end sealing itself shut.

Void frowned, she recalibrated, phased again, but the labyrinth anticipated her, reconfiguring faster now, hostile to her shortcuts.

Engineer surged ahead, nanotech formed a bridge over a collapsing chasm. She dove, rolled, and emerged into the final chamber just as the exit rune ignited.

Void appeared a heartbeat later. Too late. A chime echoed.

Back in the arena, Lady Death’s voice rang out with gleeful finality.

“Winner of the labyrinth is Engineer!”

Vampirella clapped slowly. Her eyes were bright. “Another point for the Authority.”

“That’s two straight wins. They keep this up they can run away with this tournament,” the devilish Purgatori noted.

“And that may happen,” Lady Death added.: “If Midnighter can hold suit…”

Below them, Midnighter and Shadowhawk were locked in a brutal exchange, Shadowhawk’s armored gauntlet smashed into Midnighter’s jaw, only for Midnighter to twist, absorb the blow, and respond with a knee that cracked against Shadowhawk’s chestplate.

Midnighter scoffed. “Predictable.”

So are you,” Shadowhawk shot back.

They crashed into a nearby pillar together with neither giving ground.

“In any event the Authority is in a much better spot than the WildC.A.T.S.,” stated Vampirella.

“Like Cyberforce, they have started in a hole. Losing their first two matches,” Purgatori observed.

A large screen showed Void falling to get to the center of labyrinth first and Maul collapsing under Masada’s final strike.

“No wins. No points,” Lady Death said coldly.

Vampirella tilted her head. “With the team in rough shape, sounds like a job for a leader to step in to right the ship.”

Purgatori grinned. “Good thing for them, their leader just happens to be next in the final match of the third round.”

The screen above them displayed the upcoming fight in big bold letters

WILDC.A.T.S. vs. ULTRAFORCE

SPARTAN VS. HARDCASE

“Spartan. An alien Kherubim warlord. Tactical genius. Superhuman strength, speed, and centuries of battlefield experience reborn into a cyborg body and made leader of the WildC.A.T.S.” Purgatori chuckled. “How is that for a kickass backstory?”

Vampirella gestured dramatically. “And facing him will be Hardcase. Ultraforce’s resident action hero and leader. Enhanced strength, durability, and reflexes courtesy of government science and Hollywood ego.”

Lady Death put one of her fingers in the air. “Both even lead their teams to animated shows in the ’90s.”

Vampirella smirked. “One of which people actually remember.”

Purgatori glanced toward Hardcase’s image. “That’s got to sting for the movie star.”

“So, what better way to prove everyone wrong than by humiliating Spartan on the arena floor?” mused Lady Death.

The crowd exploded with their approval of the upcoming fight.

Backstage, Ultraforce buzzed with tension. Prime paced like a caged lion. His massive frame radiated impatience.

Prime should’ve gone already,” he complained.

Siren smiled softly. “Your turn will come.”

She turned to Topaz and nodded respectfully.

“Nice work out there beating Cyblade. We really needed it. I wouldn’t have minded if Contrary had found a way to stall Engineer and Void in the labyrinth indefinitely, but we will take what we can get.

Topaz folded her arms. “A win is a win. If we are to conquer this tournament we should only rely on the warriors in this room.”

Hardcase rolled his shoulders. “I plan on keeping up what you started.”

Topaz fixed him with a sharp look. “Just don’t get cocky like that fool, Prototype.”

Hardcase adjusted his gloves. “Don’t worry I’m not overlooking Spartan. In fact, I’m looking forward to fighting him. I’m glad we were paired up.

In the W.I.L.D.C.A.T.S. locker room, Spartan stood tall at the sound of his name.

“Sooner than I expected to be called,” he admitted. “But given our team’s current status I can’t fault the logic of getting me out there.”

The red masked marksman, Grifter, did his best to encourage him. “If anyone can turn this around, it’s you.”

The fearsome warrior Zealot stepped forward to echo that support.

“You carry the honor of this team. Fight as you always have, with purpose.”

Spartan inclined his head. “Your rallying words are unnecessary… but appreciated.”

He paused at the exit.

“When you see her, tell Void not to blame herself for the loss.”

Grifter grunted. “Assuming she gets to come back to us. We still haven’t seen Maul.”

The weight of possibility of not being there for his team should he lose settled on Spartan’s shoulders.

The arena lights flared as Spartan and Hardcase emerged from opposite ends, the crowd roared as they met at center stage, a safe distance away from the brutal carnage being brought about by Midnighter and Shadowhawk as well as the fight between Troll and Chapel.

Hardcase flashed a grin. “Hope you don’t mind losing in front of this audience.”

Spartan was unmoved. “I have fought wars older than your planet.”

The three mischievous hostesses hovered above them.

“Your teams’ futures and success rest in your hands,” stated Vampirella.

“No pressure!” Purgatori teased.

Lady Death raised her hand. “Begin.”

I think Hardcase is strong enough to destroy Spartan but Spartan is so much better, he has so much more to offer in a fight. He training, bio-blasts I think they're called, the ability to endure massive damage and keep going. Hardcase won't be able to keep up.
