Cyblade of Cyberforce and Topaz of Ultraforce blasted at one another. After successfully dodging each other’s projectiles, they exchanged kicks.

Above them on the giant host platform, Lady Death stepped forward, with one finger raised. “Now then… I know you all are enjoying this action but not every victory is earned with fists.”

Vampirella nodded. “Some are earned with intellect. Control. Vision. I know our era of comics gets put in a box, but it’s not just about big brawny brutes and bad ass beautiful babes.”

Purgatori grinned. “There are also bad ass beautiful babes with big brains. And when you’ve got reality-warping geniuses on your hands, a straight fight would just be quaint."

The massive screens shifted, and displayed two teams and two names.

THE AUTHORITY — ANGELA SPICA, ENGINEER
WILDC.A.T.S. — ADRIANNA TERESHKOVA, VOID

“Engineer, the genius level intellect of the Authority who replaced her blood with liquid nano-technological robots and has the ability to reorder the matter around herself into anything she desires, weapons, shields, viruses, duplicates of herself. She faces Adrianna, who was taken over by the Void entity, was granted the ability to teleport, manipulate time, and joined the WildC.A.T.S,” Vampirella explained.

“She has psionic powers and precognition, but Engineer can time travel too,” Purgatori added.

“This,” Lady Death announced, “will not be a direct fight.”

Vampirella gestured toward a third screen that displayed a remote location. “This is a competition.”

The screen showed a floor that unfolded like a puzzle box, plates slid and rotated as towering geometric structures rose from beneath. What formed was a vast, multi-tiered Labyrinth of Shifting Possibilities, a hybrid construct of hard light, alien matter, and extradimensional space.

“Welcome to the Paradox Labyrinth!” Purgatori exclaimed. Her tail slammed against the stage and she gestured dramatically. “The goal is simple: retrieve the Core Node at the center and return it to your starting platform.”

A glowing, multi-layered sphere hovered deep within the maze. It constantly changed shape, color, and dimensional frequency.

Lady Death spoke up. “The catch? The Labyrinth reacts to you.”

“A true test of intelligence, adaptability, and power,” stated Vampirella.

“And we are throwing in an extra element just to spice things up,” Purgatori said with a wicked grin.

The crowd gasped as the blonde-haired original founder of Ultraforce, Contrary, appeared on the stage in her hover chair.

“Here to use her emotion control powers to affect both Void and Engineer in any way she can, we have Ultraforce’s Contrary!” Lady Death exclaimed.

Vampirella tiled her head. “Obviously a woman known far and wide as a skilled manipulator and the one responsible for turning countless children into Ultras through genetic manipulation would have no problem tilting the scales in her team’s favor.”

“You’re not wrong,” Contrary admitted. “I know I was invited just to add to the challenge for Void and Engineer but if I can manipulate and confuse them enough to where they both end up lost in that maze forever that means no points for the WildC.A’.T.S. or the Authority. Which would only benefit Ultraforce.”

“After that opening loss they could use the help,” Purgatori opined.

Contrary appeared displeased by that statement, and she kept watch of the battle between Topaz and Cyblade out of the corner of her eye.

Back in the WildC.A.T.S. locker area, Grifter did his best to pump up the ever-stoic Void.

“You’ve got this. I’d wager you could just look into the future and see how to win.”

“You know it’s not that simple,” Void replied. “I have seen into the far away future where Engineer and I actually work together in a new world.”

“Were you able to gather any intel that could help you win this contest?” Zealot asked.

“It was a different version of her and even a different version of me, any takeaways I could have gathered would not be worth much.”

Spartan scoffed. “You don’t need any insider information anyway to win this challenge. You have all the ability and power you need to bring our team a point.”

Void nodded. “Your confidence and faith in my ability is always welcome.”

Meanwhile, Jenny Sparks returned a victor to her team’s chambers, and the Authority welcomed her back warmly.

“I never had a doubt,” Apollo said confidently. “Well done, Jenny.”

Jenny reached for her cigarettes. “Don’t have much time to celebrate, it’s on to the next. Angela, they are calling your name.”

Angela nodded with conviction. She glanced over at Midnighter.

“Have you run this scenario over in your mind 100 times to see all possibilities, or do you only do that when you are excited about punching someone?” she asked.

“I see it playing out a few different ways. But as long as you play to your strengths, you should come out on top,” he answered. “It might not hurt to try and sabotage her along the way to help yourself out, even though it’s not a direct fight I haven’t heard them saying that would be against the rules.”

The Apache weather wielding heroine, Rainmaker, grabbed Engineer’s hand and held it in her own. “Good luck out there. I know most of you is nanotech, but you are still Angela. Be wary of that Contrary woman. Who knows what she will try against you.”

“I anticipate her meddling and I am preparing for it,” Engineer assured.

With that Engineer left to the stadium floor. Void had also appeared there.

“Welcome ladies. Before you teleport to the Labyrinth location there are a few things you should know,” Lady Death informed. “Each section responds to different inputs: logic puzzles, spatial manipulation, energy control, probability disruption, and, because I can’t give away everything, unexpected variables.”

“Are you ready?” Purgatori inquired.

Void and Engineer exchanged glances and then nodded.

Contrary clapped her hands. “Then let’s get this started.”

I loved the Wildcats series. But I never understood Void's powers.

The puzzle labyrinth fits both characters. I think Engineer have have a bit more at her disposal to deal with what she runs into.
