LADIES IN RED

The moon hung low over the Red Dragon compound like a bloodstained coin. Elektra Natchios crouched on a rooftop. Her twin sais gleamed faintly under the security lights.

She watched the guards below. They were disciplined, armed, and efficient. Red Dragon soldiers. Mavado’s men.

Elektra’s gloved fingers traced the edge of her sai as she recalled a recent conversation in her mind

Daredevil (in memory): You can’t balance the scales by selling your blade to anyone who points it at evil, Elektra. Killing for justice is still killing for hire.

Elektra: And letting evil men live because someone else couldn’t afford to pay is better?

Daredevil: It’s not about money.

Elektra: It’s always about money, Matthew. Yours, mine, or theirs. Blood always comes with a price.

The memory faded. Her target was Mavado himself, the second in command of the Red Dragon crime syndicate. Elektra had known about the Red Dragon mostly through reputation. An evil organization with their fingers in a lot of pots and even whispers of deals with interdimensional monsters. What she had heard reminded Elektra a little of the Hand.  Either way the world would be better off without Mavado and so would Elektra’s bank account. Elektra took a deep breath and then slipped off the ledge and into shadow.

Inside, the compound was a maze of concrete corridors and flickering lights. Elektra’s movements were fluid, there was no sound, no wasted motion. She dropped two guards before they even knew they were being hunted, her sais found soft gaps or vulnerability between their armor plates.

When she finally triggered an alarm, intentionally, six fully covered mercenaries poured in, electric batons in hand.

Mercenary: There is the intruder! How did she get over here?

Mercenary #2: Who cares, light her up!

They surged forward.

Elektra spun low, catching the first baton strike on her sai and twisting, sending the baton clattering to the ground as she drove a kick into the man’s knee. She rolled under a swing, flipped backward off a wall, and came down in a blur of red. Her sai pierced one man’s chest; she kicked off him and slammed another into the concrete pillar hard enough to knock his helmet off.

The last two hesitated.

Elektra: You should have run.

A quick flick, the twin sais left her hands like fangs in flight. Both men fell before they could scream.

Silence returned. Elektra stepped over the bodies with a frown on her face.

Elektra: That’s it? A man in Mavado’s position, and only this many guards? No... something’s wrong.

She pressed onward, her senses sharp for any surprise ambush. Every hallway was too quiet. Every door, too conveniently unlocked.

Then she heard it, a wet, tearing sound, followed by a scream abruptly cut short. Elektra approached the sound and slipped through a half-open door.

The room beyond looked like a slaughterhouse.

Red Dragon soldiers lay gutted across the marble floor. The walls were painted crimson , but not by paint.
In the center of it all stood a woman wrapped in blood and malice, her skin pale as ivory and her hair the color of spilled wine. The woman’s  eyes glowed faintly red, and her lips were twisted into a cruel smug smile as she drew a blade made of congealed blood from her own arm.

Skarlet. A mage of the deadly arts of blood magic and a devoted adopted daughter of Shao Kahn. She stood over Mavado, whose tailored uniform was torn from her attack. He held on desperately to the twin hook swords n his hands.

Skarlet: You thought you could deceive Shao Kahn? That you could make deals behind his back?

Mavado struggled a little to speak.

Mavado: Business is business. Even Outworld’s former emperor must understand leverage.

Skarlet: Outworld’s true emperor…

She snarled.

Skarlet: You’ll understand leverage when your body hangs hollow from his throne. I’ll carve you out and leave what’s left as a shrine.

She raised her arm. Blood swirled around her like ribbons.

Elektra: That’s far enough.

Skarlet turned quickly. Elektra stepped from the shadows, twin sais ready, her expression calm and cold.

Elektra: Get in line. His head’s already spoken for.

Skarlet’s gaze swept Elektra up and down. She was clearly amused.

Skarlet: You look like an Edenian... but no. Your blood smells of Earthrealm.

She licked her lips.

Skarlet: Stay out of my way, assassin. Or I’ll drain you and paint the walls with what’s inside you.

Elektra was unfazed by Skarlet’s threat.

Elektra: I’ve danced with demons, faced gods, and gutted worse things than you. I’m here for a contract, not theatrics. You can threaten all you like… I intend to get paid.

Skarlet tilted her head, and turned her focus away from Mavado.

Skarlet: Brave. Foolish. The two are often interchangeable.

As the tension rose, Mavado quietly pressed his heel on a floorplate, a hidden mechanism.
A panel in the floor slid open. He leapt through. His voice echoed up from below.

Mavado: We’ll settle this another time, witch!

Skarlet spun toward the opening; fury flashed in her eyes. She then glared back at Elektra.

Skarlet: He escapes because of you!

Elektra: He escaped because you were busy grandstanding.

Skarlet’s eyes flared, the air around her vibrated. Blood droplets rose up from the corpses scattered on the ground and  began to orbit  around her

Skarlet:  You cost me my target, Earthrealmer. Now I’ll take you instead.

Elektra held up her sais, and stepped into an aggressive stance.

Elektra: I was thinking the same thing.

The two women circled each other with violent intent.
