The attempt on the ambassador's life was a phantom's whisper in the middle of the Geneva Global Summit. A flicker of motion on a dozen security cameras, a silent takedown of three guards, and a single, deflected knife-strike that was over before the diplomat even realized he was in danger. The assassin, a ghost in black, vanished into the night, leaving behind a single, blurry image and a city's worth of chaos.
To King T'Challa of Wakanda, this was more than an international incident; it was a personal affront. The targeted ambassador was a key ally. The assassin's skill was legendary, but their audacity was an insult to his nation's security. He would not wait for the clumsy machinations of international law. He would hunt this ghost himself. The sleek, nanite-woven fabric of the Panther Habit flowed over his body, and Black Panther became a silent hunter in the moonlit, alpine city.
The "assassin," however, was not who she seemed. The attack had been a feint, a deep-cover operation by Cassandra Cain, under orders from Batman to plant a nano-tracker on the secretly corrupt ambassador. Her mission had been a success. Now, all she had to do was exfiltrate the city and disappear. But as she moved across the rain-slicked rooftops of Geneva's Old Town, she felt it. A new presence. Not the clumsy, predictable movements of police, but the silent, patient, and impossibly fast footsteps of a fellow predator. She was no longer the hunter. She was the prey.
Their paths converged on the high, gothic spire of the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre. Black Panther emerged from the shadows of a gargoyle, his suit a patch of absolute darkness that seemed to drink the moonlight, the white lenses of his mask glowing with a calm, regal intensity.
He saw his target. A small, silent figure in a dark, hooded uniform. Her posture was perfectly balanced, a living weapon at rest. He could sense her skill, the deadly grace in her stillness. This was the ghost from the recordings.
Cassandra saw him, and her entire world tilted. Her unique gift, the ability to read the language of the body, was suddenly useless. She saw the man, the king, the master martial artist within the suit—every muscle coiled with lethal potential, a warrior whose skill was on a level with her own. But the suit itself... it was a dead space, a void. It had no tells, no muscle twitches, no preparatory movements. It was like trying to read the intent of a statue. For the first time in her life, she was fighting blind.
"Your escape ends here, assassin," T'Challa's voice was a low, regal growl, filtered by his mask. It was not a threat; it was a statement of fact. "You are fast, but you left a trail. You will answer for your attack on the Wakandan delegation."
Cassandra said nothing. Words were a clumsy, foreign language to her. The language she knew, the one she spoke with perfect fluency, was the language of combat. She dropped into a low, fluid stance, a silent poem of deadly intent.
She moved.
She was not a blur; she was simply gone from where she stood and was suddenly in front of him. Her attack was a flawless, lightning-fast series of strikes, not of brute force, but of pure, anatomical precision. A dozen pinpoint jabs and kicks aimed at the nerve clusters of the neck, the jaw, the solar plexus—a sequence that would have dropped even Batman into instant paralysis.
The only sound was a series of soft, dull, unsatisfying thuds.
Her fists and feet, which had shattered stone and bone, connected with the Vibranium-weave suit with absolutely no effect. The kinetic energy, the perfect force of her killing art, simply vanished into the fabric, absorbed without a whisper. It was like punching a hole in the night sky.
Black Panther had not moved a single inch. He stood, a silent, unmovable monolith, and watched her. The glowing lenses of his mask betrayed no emotion. In that single, terrifying instant, Cassandra Cain, the greatest hand-to-hand fighter in the world, realized she was facing an opponent she could not hurt.
