Port Vice was a city built on sin, a rain-soaked purgatory of crumbling warehouses and neon-lit despair where rival gangs ruled the night. Tonight was a big night. A cross-dimensional arms deal was going down, a merger of two worlds of crime. High-tech Intergang weaponry was being sold to the Maggia crime family. The deal would create a new super-syndicate. And it had drawn the attention of two of the world's most brutal vigilantes.
From the shadows of New York, he came as a one-man army. Frank Castle, The Punisher, had tracked the Maggia here. His mission, as always, was simple: find the guilty and execute them. He moved through the perimeter of the warehouse district with the brutal efficiency of a military operation, his silenced pistol whispering death, leaving a trail of bodies for the rats and the rain. This was not justice. This was pest control.
From the darkness of Gotham, he came as a vengeful ghost. Jason Todd, the Red Hood, had tracked Intergang to this cesspool. Batman wanted surveillance; Jason knew that wasn't enough. A threat this big needed to be cut out, permanently. He descended from the rooftops, a blur of acrobatic motion, his twin pistols barking in the night. His kills were quicker, more stylish than the other hunter's, but no less final.
They became aware of each other through the carnage. Frank found a group of mobsters taken out with impossible, close-quarters precision, some with their necks snapped at acrobatic angles. A new player, he thought, his grip tightening on his rifle. Talented, but messy. Jason, in turn, discovered a kill-zone, a crossfire set up with the cold, mathematical perfection of a seasoned guerrilla warrior. An old dog, he sneered to himself. Brutal, but predictable.
The two predators, unaware of the other's true identity, stalked the same prey through the same hunting ground, their paths inevitably converging on the massive, central warehouse where the final exchange was about to take place.
They saw each other at the same instant, two dark shapes on opposite ends of a cavernous space filled with panicked, armed gangsters.
The Punisher saw a younger man in a high-tech red helmet and tactical gear, moving with a fluid confidence that bordered on arrogance. He was skilled, a professional. But he was in Frank's way. And in Frank Castle's war, there are no allies, only targets.
The Red Hood saw an older, grizzled man in a simple ballistic vest, a white skull spray-painted on it like a crude gravestone. He saw a relic, a blunt instrument from a bygone era. Jason was here to bring a new, more efficient brand of lethal justice to the underworld, and this old man was his first piece of competition.
The gangsters, caught between two silent, advancing specters of death, began to open fire wildly. It was a mistake.
A shot from Frank's rifle took out a mob boss. A burst from Jason's pistols silenced a twitchy enforcer. The two men moved in perfect, deadly concert, clearing the room until they were the only two left standing, the crime lords dead at their feet. They stood fifty yards apart, the rain hammering on the tin roof above.
"You're not on the manifest," Frank's voice was a low, gravelly growl, a sound of pure menace. "This is my operation. Walk away."
"Funny," Jason's voice, electronically distorted by his helmet, was a confident sneer. "I was about to say the same thing. This is my town now, old man. Get out, or get put down."
For a moment, there was only the sound of the rain. Then, in a single, fluid motion, they both raised their pistols, their primary targets no longer the dead criminals around them, but the dark, stubborn reflection staring back from across the room.
