The Murkwood was a dimension that had long been forgotten by the forces of good, a gloomy, primordial swamp where the very air was thick with ancient malice. It was the perfect resting place for an artifact of pure, concentrated evil: the Shadowstone. A crystallized heart of darkness, it pulsed with a power that promised any sorcerer who claimed it the strength to conquer their universe. Such a prize could not remain hidden forever.
A crackle of ozone and purple lightning announced the first arrival. With a triumphant, high-pitched cackle, Skeletor, the Lord of Destruction, teleported into the swamp. He held his Havoc Staff aloft, its ram-skull eyes blazing as it homed in on the artifact's energy. "At last!" he shrieked with glee. "The final key to my conquest of Grayskull! That muscle-bound moron, He-Man, will be crushed beneath my heel!"
Moments later, a swirl of black sand and whispering winds heralded the second arrival. From the vortex emerged a frail, wizened figure in a tattered red robe. It was Mumm-Ra, the Ever-Living, guided here by a vision from the Ancient Spirits of Evil. "Yes," he rasped, his voice the sound of dust and decay. "The power to finally destroy the accursed Thundercats and their brat-king, Lion-O, is at hand."
They both followed the trail of corruption to the same destination: a crumbling, vine-choked altar in the heart of the swamp. Floating just above it, the Shadowstone radiated a sickening, purple-black light that seemed to drink the very life from the air.
They saw each other at the same instant. The reaction was not fear, but one of immediate and profound contempt.
Skeletor looked upon the withered, mummy-like form of his rival and let out a derisive snort. "Nya-ha-ha! And what have we here? Did a museum forget to lock up for the night?" he taunted, his skull-face grinning with scorn. "Step aside, you bandaged buffoon! The Shadowstone belongs to Skeletor, the true Master of the Universe!"
Mumm-Ra’s ancient, dead eyes glared at the blue-skinned bodybuilder with the floating skull. "Insolent, bone-faced fool!" he hissed, his voice a dry whisper of ancient hatred. "You dare to address Mumm-Ra, the Ever-Living? I have commanded armies when your ancestors were still learning to grunt! This power is eternal, ancient... it is MINE by right!"
"Your right is to be dust!" Skeletor retorted, raising his Havoc Staff, its head crackling with destructive energy. "And I'm happy to help you get there!"
"You will be the one returned to dust, upstart!" Mumm-Ra shrieked, his frail body beginning to glow with a terrifying, red light. He raised his arms to the sky, his voice booming with a sudden, impossible power.
"Ancient Spirits of Evil... TRANSFORM THIS DECAYED FORM... TO MUMM-RA... THE EVER-LIVING!"
A torrent of energy engulfed the mummy, his body swelling with grotesque muscle, his bandages ripping away to reveal a hulking, blue-skinned form of pure evil.
Skeletor just laughed, undaunted. "A cheap parlor trick! Let's see how your new muscles handle the power of Havoc!"
The two greatest evils of their respective worlds stood ready to clash, their monumental egos and immense magical power about to turn the ancient swamp into their personal, destructive playground.
