OOC History

I think the idea was originally inspired by Beetlejuice. “What would Lydia be like if she had been raised from birth in that house, with no mortals around to keep her company? How would she eat? What kind of things would she learn?†Then I wrote the first line of her bio and BAM, she became a spiritual successor to Viis.

Personality

Nico Fera is a bit of a conundrum… when she’s warm, comfortable, and has recently eaten she could almost be mistaken for a someone’s daughter. Pretty much any other time, however, and she more resembles a wild animal than anything human. She is human, technically, or something close to it. She wanders the halls of the upper keep these days, and Merle Silver has made it something of a personal mission to keep her warm and well fed as much as possible, either out of kindness for the rest of the Guild or because he values her ability to keep Brag out of his study. Something about Brag sets her right off: clawing, howling, teeth gnashing… so you know she can’t be all bad.

Fictional Character Biography

Tchuuu found her I think, or rather she found him. Brother Tchuuu is always doing strange things with doors, you know, and it seems apparent now that he walked into her home one day for whatever reason. Somehow, she followed him back here, and now we’re stuck with her. She speaks a horrifying amalgam of dozens of different languages, but can’t hold a conversation in any one for more than a few seconds. Her vision and hearing are incredibly acute, but she suffers from delusions and hallucinations. She was given her own room, but has taken to sleeping on the floor in front of Professor Silver’s door, savagely threatening anyone who disturbs him. She is easily placated by food or clothing, both of which she hoards compulsively. Understanding her history is next to impossible, since nearly everything she says in unintelligible and whenever anyone asks Tchuuu where he found her invariably answers “middle drawer.†It seems she was raised alone as the sole living… errr… soul in a place populated by ghosts, wraiths, and spirits. Her caretakers, such as they were, attempted to raise her to the best of their abilities in spite of their corporeal limitations. Her body and mind were altered by years of direct contact with the ethereal. Her skin is pallid, chalk-white and cold to the touch, her voice is by turns resonant, mournful, and haunting. On the rare occasions when she deigns to speak, her unique dialect bounces around the linguistic landscape like a pinball, never sticking with a single language structure longer than is strictly necessary to express a single thought or idea. Her eyes are twin pools of swirling aether, large, ever-changing, unsettlingly deep, and extremely sensitive to light. It was apparent from the beginning that she can see and hear things that are hidden to others, and although the full extent of that statement has never been accurately tested, she has never demonstrated any confusion in navigating the Guildhouse, suggesting that her perceptions may well be on par with Tchuuu himself. It is clear that, at the very least, the astral and ethereal planes are open books to her, and she is aware of divine and infernal auras around both objects and individuals. The myriad horrors that unchecked sensitivity to the various strata of the Arcanus Obliques exacted on her young, impressionable mind are far too numerous and unsettling to mention.

Nico was given her name by Merle Silver as a joke- he was working on a particularly unstable Nickel-Cobalt (NiCo) isotope at the time, and the name stuck. She has only recently begun to respond to it. Her surname was originally Feral, for obvious (disparaging) reasons, but the consensus of the Guild Brothers was that such a label was unfitting if she was ever going to have a shot at rehabilitation. Dropping the last letter was an easy compromise.

Of all the denizens of the Guild, she seems to have attached herself the most to Professor Silver, although she is wildly entertained by the sight of Gate practicing his art and always spends several minutes afterward investigating the surrounding area after one of his teleports. Conversely she detests Brag and will, without hesitation, violently attack him on sight. This single act has endeared her to a number of half-brothers and freemen.

The Quick & Dirty Description

A young girl, raised from birth in a haunted house. The ghosts did their best, but ghosts have a tendency to forget the needs of the body, and the fragile nature of the living mind. She’s malnourished, feral, and several shades of insane. They did teach her a few useful tricks, though.

Powers and Abilities

Nico can see and hear things that are hidden from others. She has demonstrated the ability to see many of the planes that make up the Arcanus Obliques, including the Astral and Ethereal planes. She understands a vast and uncataloged number of languages and although she doesn’t seem able to stick to any single language for the duration of a conversation, Nico has shown the ability to make her voice resonate with a kind of super-inflection, reminiscent of The Voice. On the rare occasions when she articulates herself in this way she is able to convey a number of truths in spite of her linguistic limitations, making her intentions and emotions known and felt clearly even when her words are not. She has also been known to use this ability offensively when in the presence of Brag (whom she inexplicably loathes) as a sort of banshee’s scream, causing pain and disorientation to anyone within earshot. In spite of her predilection toward food and warmth she has displayed the remarkable ability to go without either for weeks at a time with seemingly no ill effects (except on her mood.)

Equipment

Nico has no possessions, nor has she ever expressed interest in material items apart from food and warm clothing.
